10 Cheap but Fun Date Ideas

By Edited Feb 17, 2014 1 3

Being newlyweds, my husband and I are not yet financially stable. But we do still like to get out of the house and have fun. When it comes to planning something to do we usually try to pass that duty onto the other. At the beginning we have struggled to find things to do that are fun and yet still at a low cost. After many months of struggling to find low cost fun, we have succeeded! It really is possible! Some ideas may sound "lame" (what I told him before I actually tried them) but we ended up having a great time in the end!

1) Going for Ice Cream

Yes, it sounds boring. However, this is something that you can always do differently. It's a treat that everyone loves, and if you don't there are always other options to order. Going for ice cream lets you escape out of your house. It's only a few dollars and it's the perfect opportunity for you both to sit down and chat. My husband and I have also put a spin on it to make it more interesting . This is a usual date for us, and we always had "the usual" flavors time after time. Now when we go, we make sure that we each order a different, strange, unusual flavor that we have never tried before. Then we can share and it gives us something different to talk about as well!

2) Going for a Walk

This is an activity that can be made fun, that is healthy, and that you can tie in with other date ideas as well! All you really need is each other and a place to walk to. I have found that if you have a destination in mind, it is more enjoyable. For instance, walking to the ice cream shop.  Or walking to a park. Take the old pieces of crust out of the bottom of the bread bag and go feed the ducks. Or walk to the nearby park and go play on the play structures like you did when you were 10 years old. You will be surprised at how much fun it is to act like a kid again, together. (and the amount of calories you'll burn.) now that's just a bonus!

3) Picnic in the Park/Zoo

Spending a day at the park or at the zoo and having a picinc for lunch is always a greway relaxing way to spend an afternoon. Walk around the zoo and watch the exotic animals roam around. Feed the birds and squirrels, and maybe get to ride an elephant! ( now that's a pretty exciting date!) Pack a picnic for lunch and find a spot of shade under a big tree. Make sure you remember a blanket , your favorite sandwiches, cookies, crackers and cheese, and don't forget Dixie cups and a bottle of your fav fruit juice or wine! (anything in your cupboard will taste great for a picnic. The atmosphere will make up for it!)

4) Board Games/ Video Games

This is a date idea that I find we do a lot! If you have a lot of games then you have a wide selection to choose from. If not, go buy a game that you both have interest in and that will be played a numerous amount of times. Whether it is a card game, video game or board game, you will be surprised at how fast time passes once you get into it. I find that playing video games with my husband that allows us to play on the same team ( super Mario bros wii) as opposed to playing against each other, allows us for a better time. It builds your relationship. It makes you work together instead of "killing" each other. We often find that once we get playing we have so much fun that we realize we lost track of time and have to stop playing and go to bed!

5) Cooking

Now this is a date idea that might actually be more fun if both partners have no cooking skills whatsoever! Find a recipe or cooking video that appeals to the both of you. Something that you have both never tried. It doesn't even matter if you don't have all the correct ingredients! Just start cooking. If you don't have something, substitute it with something that you think would work. Once it is done, you might be surprise what the two of you created together. Or you might not be! But hey, that is what Mac n cheese is for, right?

6)  Bowling

You can usually find a place to go bowling that costs only around $2.00 per game.  Most bowling alleys have stepped up their entertainment with in the last 10 years. You can usually find snacks, drinks, glow bowling, and sometimes live bands and specific music nights. A lot of bowling alleys now offer games, like bowling bingo. There is 5 pin and 10 pin to choose from. If your local bowling alley hasn't cranked up the fun-o-meter, take it into your own hands to do so. Search google for fun bowling games and print them out. Bowling doesn't take up that much time, but it gets you out of the house and it really is a lot of fun.

7) Day at the Beach

A day at the beach is one of my favorite date ideas. Most beaches don't charge you to enter so it is absolutely free! There is nothing better then laying in the sun on a perfect summer day with your partner. Possibilities are endless at the beach. Rub sunscreen on each other and chat while suntanning. Go for a swim or a walk along the beach. Play with a beach ball, football or frisbee. Go for a hike. The list goes on. Just pack a picnic lunch, a beach blanket, towels, sun screen, your swim suits, and you're good to go!

8) Make it a Double Date

Invite another couple to date night! Do any of the date ideas above with a pair of friends or meet up with them somewhere else. Go to a restaurant late afternoon and order a huge appetizer platter to share. There is a LOT of food on one of those thing and splitting the bill between 4 people only leaves you with a bill of about $5.00. Invite your friends back to your place after that and battle each other on some board games. Since it technically is still date night, play on teams and be on your man/woman's team. May the best couple win!!

9) Photograpy Fun

No matter where you are or what you are doing, you can always make it a fun time if you have a camera! Grab you digital cam and head outside. It doesn't matter if you don't have a destination in mind, just start walking. Walk up to funny things on the side of the street and take pictures of each other. Find a beautiful, scenic place and test out your photography skills on each other. (you might be surprise at how professional your pics really do look.) Ask a passing bystander to take a picture of the two of you together as you pass by your favorite spots. Look at all the pictures together when you get home. The great thing about digital cameras is that you can delete without wasting money on film! (If you continue to do this, you can make a huge photo album of your first year together. I made one and it was the best decision! There are so many memories that I would have forgotten about if I would have never made that album.)

10) Yard Work

I can hear you already. "Seriously? Yard work?! Ugh!"  Yes, I'm serious. I have done it and it was honestly really fun. Yard work doesn't have to be just pulling weeds and mowing the grass. Plant the garden together, rake up the leaves. Even if it takes you all day to get the yard done it doesn't matter as long as you had fun. Watering the garden could turn into a water fight with the garden hose. Raking the leaves could turn into wrestling in the leaf pile or a leaf fight! Push each other around in the wheel barrow and make sure you get all this on that camera of yours! These will be those moments That you won't want to forget!

You can make pretty much anything fun if you want to. Just thinking of ideas that are completely out of the ordinary. Think of things you liked to do when you were a kid and share those memories with the guy/gal that you like. Spending that time together is the thing that matters the most. Sometimes the most cheap, simple things can turn out to be the most fun! Enjoy!!

Nice article! And I completely agree about games, it is much better to play together against a common opponent (the PC, the "bank", ...) than playing against each other. Any particular board games you would recommend? Cooking is actually not working so much for us. We both have different ways to cook (my wife wants to measure everything and follows scrupulously the recipe while I do approximative things with feelings). So, generally either one of us cooks and the other rest and gets to enjoy what the other has prepared (also, it somehow always taste better when you don't know how easy it is to make).

Thank you! This was my first ever article so I wasn't sure if I did it right or not! One of our favorite games right now is "Logo's". It is a very fun trivia game based on guessing logos and slogans from companies around the world!
