10 Misconceptions About Organic Food

People think a lot of things about organic food, most of them are good food. Organic food is not bad, to be sure, it is the way people were meant to eat. Humans were not meant to consume preservatives or meat treated with antibiotics. They were meant to eat what they could find. However, many people think that just because it is organic, that it is perfect. However, there are some facts about organic food that may shock you.

"Organic" does not mean 100 percent organic

When buying organic food, be sure to check the label. It may not even be that organic. Unless the label says 100% organic, chances are it might not be. The USDA demands that any food that can wear the 100% organic label must be at least 95% organic. However, some ingredients in food like sausage casing or celery powder are exempt for this. Mainly because they are too hard to prove that they are either organic or not. Keep this fact in mind when buying organic foods, just because it says it is doesn't mean it fully is.

Organic foods aren't superfoods

While organic food will cut down on your pesticide exposure by one third, it can still be contaminated with pesticides from the soil or inside an agriculture warehouse. Many people put faith in these foods, even though there are the studies on the health benefits are constantly in conflict. If you buy your organic food locally, as you should, you can be much more sure that they are real organic foods that are actually good for you.

Organic meat does not mean happy animals

If you only eat organic meat because you picture happy animals roaming free on idyllic farms, you would be upset to know the truth of it. While the USDA requires that in order to be organic meat, the meat product in question (beef, chicken, eggs, pork, ect) must be free from antibiotics and growth hormones. That within itself is a great thing as studies have linked to a variety of cancers and early puberty in children. However, this doesn't mean that the cows you are eating are grass fed or the chickens are free roaming. They can still be kept in those horrible cramped pens and fed corn to fatten them up. There is just no antibiotics or hormones mixed in. If you only eat organic meat because you think the animals live nice full lives naturally, you may want to rethink that decision.

"All-natural" means nothing

Do not be fooled by anything that says "all-natural". The FDA does not regulate any of those products. This means that anyone can slap "all-natural" on a product in order to dupe the ever growing health kick people, and we all know it works. Foods labeled "organic" on the other hand, must follow strict guidelines including not using synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics, and GMOs.

"Organic" seafood means nothing

While the FDA requires most food that wears the organic label to adhere to strict guidelines, seafood is strangely not one of those foods. The FDA does not test it for toxicity, so thus the  label may in fact be a lie. A lie that is likely costing you more than the seafood that is not labeled as organic.

Organic junk is still junk

You know all those cookies, candies, and chips that have the organic label on them? Well being organic doesn't make them any better for you. If people stopped and thought about it, they would realize this. Those junk food items still have all the excess fat, grease, sugar and salt. The only difference is that they lack the artificial ingredients of their non-organic brethren. Sure, you will get some natural ingredients and vitamins, but you still are not eating any better.

You cannot wash off pesticides

The practice of washing produce is spreading rapidly around the world, with the thought that it washes off pesticides. It does actually wash them off the skin of the produce, but it doesn't wash them out from the flesh. Produce with thick waterproof casings like plums are less susceptible to pesticides absorbing into the flesh, however produce with weaker skin like strawberries absorb pesticides readily, and need them because their sweet aroma attracts insects. So if you are overly concerned about pesticides, you best be careful which produce you do buy. However, this does not mean you should just give up washing your produce, though. Washing it removes food-borne-illness pathogens as well as pesticides on the outside.

The stickers on produce mean something

When buying produce there is usually a sticker on the produce with two sets of numbers and a barcode. There usually will be a four digit number that the cashiers type in to identify the produce then there will be another number by the barcode. You can actually tell if a piece of produce is grown organically by that number. If it begins with the number 9 means that the produce is wholly organic, while if it begins with the number 4 it was likely treated with pesticides and preservatives.

Just because it is organic does not mean it is local

While organic farms help preserve water and soil quality, it was originally meant to help reduce humanities environmental impact and the world around us. However, many of these natural brands are owned by giant corporations. There is nothing wrong with that, but because of this the food still travels over 1,000 miles to get to your plate. Not only do locally grown organic foods cut down on the emissions used to ship them, but you can really be assured that they are fresh and not processed in the various ways that corporations use via loopholes in FDA regulations.

Pregnant woman and kids should pay attention

Pregnant women and kids have the most to gain from organic foods. Numerous studies have shown the children and even fetuses are effected by even small amounts of pesticides in food. So after reading these truths about foods, pregnant women and those with children should be every aware of what kind of food they are buying and whether or not it is in fact organic.
