10 Simple Stenciling Ideas

By Edited Jun 12, 2016 1 1

Have a look at this brief tutorial below. This is the basic technique to follow for all of your stenciling projects. Obviously you will be using different mediums for things like T-shirts and floor boards, but at the end of the day, you will be sticking to the basics.

How to Make a Stencil

Stenciled Furniture

Using various painting techniques to create a certain look to items that need a lift can do some good, but stenciling can really add to a unique sense of style. There are loads to choose from here. You can add something elegant in the center, or you can create a continuous floral pattern, for example.

You can still use certain painting techniques, like distressing to add age, and after that create your stencil. You can also use a glaze to add to the vintage style.

Stenciled Floors

A floor that is stenciled can add a personal touch to the home. The best thing is to buy a stencil, which is professionally made. This is usually made out of plastic, which you will then just move around, depending on what you want to do.

Instead of spending a fortune on a kitchen floor, you can do something yourself. Concrete can be beautified and bathrooms can be made to look good with big bold stripes or smaller designs.

T-Shirt Stencil Designs

Simply by cutting a design out of a piece of paper of your choice, you would be on the way to creating your very own uniquely style t-shirt. All you need to do is cut the stencil out, get yourself fabric paints, and when it is dry, peel it off - it is as simple as that.

Tote Bags

The same technique can be used for a plain old tote bag, which you take to the supermarket to load your groceries in. Suddenly, this becomes a lot more exciting. This will also make a great gift. Some people are happy with a nice bold design in the center of the bag, and others want to dye it first, and then add their work of art. The choice is yours.

Tablecloth Stenciling

This is a low cost way of making something from nothing into soemthing fairly creative. You can do this simply or more boldy. Some people just like to use a stencil around the border, others want to stamp it at regular intervals, or in the middle. You can also personalize it with family photos printed out, or even your pets. Using various quotes is also another nice thing to think about.

Labelling can be used in so many different ways. Some people like to be creative, and use big bold letters at random on a canvas. Others like to focus on typography. It's always nice to have the name of your child above his or her bed. If you are a teacher, then this type of stencilling will come to good use.

Wall Stencils

Wall stencils can be created for kids bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens - you name it, these are probably the most popular type of stencil around. It can change a bland and boring room around to something a lot more exciting, giving it a lot more atmosphere. You can order decals for this, but why would you want to if you can make your own.  Stencils also look good as a border around a room. You can either put these around the top of the room or at the bottom. In addition, this can add to a theme, especially with a child's room.

Storage Boxes

One way of saving space, and reducing the amount of clutter around you, is finding a couple of boxes to put all of your garb inside. This works well, but decorating them will look even better. Here is where stencilling looks good. It can be attractive on a rustic wooden box, painted white, and it can also work well on a plain old cardboard box, covered in some sort of fabric.

There are tons of different frames that you can choose from. Some people think painting them is enough, and adding something extra may just be going over the top, so you have to think of that before you go to crazy. It may be a  better idea to start off with photo frames, and look into a certain theme, which corresponds with the actual photo.

You have some great ideas on creating great stencils and how to use them. I did a textile course and made a tablecloth plus a set of curtains.
That also encouraged me to start my own home silk Screening business. Good fun business although I stressed out with the drawing and art work. Not good at that part.
