How Simple Steps Each Day Can Protect Your Memory As You Age

It is one of life’s greatest ironies that as we get wiser and our life skills more developed so too does our susceptibility to age related memory loss .This perception that loss of memory is inevitable is very common and cuts across age, race and gender and for many decades after World War 2   has been the prevailing view amongst leading medical experts and researchers of the day.

The reality is whatever age you are, you are capable of sustaining maximum memory performance simply and effectively by adopting uncomplicated practices that with practice will become second nature and fully incorporated into your daily routine.

1. Think about your current way of life .What is good for you and what is bad .Try to develop healthy lifestyle habits that will have a positive effect on your brain power. Two of the most negative habits for memory protection are cigarettes and alcohol. It's a good idea to remember that with most things a little is always better than a lot, a drink  or two once in a while will probably not cause long lasting  damage, but, drinking to excess will likely cause long term issues which will affect your  long term memory performance.

2. Increase the amount of Vitamin B in your diet. There is now significant research that demonstrates that individuals whose diets have recommended amounts of B3, B5 and B9 (Folic Acid) are less likely to suffer from memory loss than those individuals that don’t have these Vitamins in their diets

3. Increase the amount of antioxidants you absorb by eating a good selection of fresh vegetables and fruit every day

4. Make exercise as regular as brushing your teeth in the morning. Exercise helps negate the factors that cause stress and this action appears to have a significant positive effect on the memory centre of the brain.

5. Not getting enough sleep can cause difficulties in concentration and ultimately effect memory further down the line .Turn off your phone before you go to bed and try not to read computers in bed. Make sure you get a full night's sleep every night most sleep experts will recommend a minimum of 6 to 8 hours each night.

6. Develop relationships with other people. Regardless of your ability to socialise Even if you are having regular conversations and communications with others will be greatly beneficial to your memory.

7. Take note of the amount of stress you encounter and experience and attempt to manage your feelings effectively. Some creative outlets are relaxing by using mindfulness meditation techniques

8. If you are using doctor prescribed medication, try to understand the potential side effects that could be having a negative effect on your memory .There are a number of commonly prescribed medicines that do have a detrimental effect on the brains ability to remember in the short term.

9. Develop new outlets for your creativity. Try a pastime that requires focus and concentration and practise improving the length of time you spend in the flow of a particular task or activity.

10. Many people find the addition of natural brain supplements helps balance the nutritional needs of the brain. Natural memory boosters and brain supplements provide all the nutrients needed for brain health and a sharper memory.
