10 Things I Hate About You

After watching Heath Ledger in the film A Knight’s Tale, he became one of my favorites so it is just right that I went on to watch his other films even if he is now dead. I found this film while searching for his other films and thought I wouldn’t like it because it is basically a teen romantic comedy. Still, him being one of the lead cast made me took a peep in the trailer of the movie and what followed was a 100 minutes of pure enjoyment as I watch the whole movie.

10 Things I Hate About You is a modern day retelling of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”.  It is a teen romantic comedy film which stars the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles and was shown in the year 1999. Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is the new kid at Padua High School.  He is a little geeky, and soon befriends Michael (David Kumholtz), another ‘geek’ in the school. Soon Cameron developed a liking on the pretty and popular Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik).  However, Bianca likes Joey (Andrew Keegan), an arrogant guy who works as a male-model and who had a brief affair and had bedded Kat (Julia Stiles), Bianca's older sister and made a bet that he could also do the same with Bianca. Kat and Bianca were sisters who live with their overprotective father, Dr. Walter Stratford (Larry Miller), an OB/Gynecologist who imposes the rule that Bianca can only date if her older sister Kat dates. Of course, that will be hard since Kat is a feminist who seems to never want to date anybody.

Cameron asked for Michael’s help to be able to date Bianca for the prom. But Bianca informs him of his father’s rule. So the guys made a plan to get the school’s delinquent Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat. But before they could ask him, Cameron got scared of Patrick. It was Joey, however, who bribed Patrick to take Kat out. Patrick agrees, not knowing that he would really fall for Kat in the end. What follows then is a heartwarming, fun and riotous turn of events because of misunderstanding and miscommunication. To find out who dated who, it was up to you to find out as I will not give you any clue.

My favorite part is the scene where Heath Ledger is singing and dancing up and down on those steps in front of Kat’s whole soccer team while the school’s security guards are trying to get him. Anyone who watches it will agree that Heath Ledger's performance is the one that ends up stealing the show, mainly because he fits the role perfectly. Another favorite is the scene where Bianca and Kat’s Dad, Dr. Walter Stratford, tells Bianca to wear the belly suit, it just looks so funny.

Loved this movie, the comedy is good and made me laughed many times, and I know you’ll love it too! I think every single actor played their role so well, and the music is excellent, too. It’s definitely worth-watching.

It's much smarter than the average high school movie. There were a lot of "teenybopper" movies coming out around that time, and this one was definitely the best. It was no surprise that Heath Ledger would go on to become a star (I remember Entertainment Weekly describing him in this movie as being like "Val Kilmer before he went flaky"). Hard for me to believe this came out more than 15 years ago. I wonder what happened to Julia Stiles.

Heath Ledger is definitely a big loss to the movie industry, he was so good. I can watch this movie over and over and not get bored. Thanks for reading, RLoftis4.
