10 Things to do in Oslo
Refreshingly gentile Oslo is a cultured capital city that mixes
inside things to do with outside activities with typical Scandinavian panache.
Here's a quick rundown of 10 things to do
while on vacation in Oslo…
1.
Stay in a Hostel. Norway
isn't exactly on the backpacker map, due mainly to its high cost of living, but
experiencing an enjoyable vacation in its capital that doesn't break the bank
is easy enough thanks to the many Oslo hostels that dot the city. Friendly and welcoming, these are also stylish and
comfortable places; they make the perfect place to rest your head for the night
while exploring the city.
The Oslo Youth Hostel Haraldshein is a top
ranked Oslo
hostel that features a kitchen, a TV room, and well equipped dorms in its
centrally located building. Another favorite on the backpacker scene is the
Sentrum Pensjonat. Book a stay in either of these hostels – or any of the other
budget accommodations located in and around town – and you guarantee yourself a
fun and affordable time.
2.
Visit the Opera House. Even if there isn't a show
on inside, a visit to Norway's
recently opened Opera House is a must. Shaped like a ship, it's a beguilingly
attractive building that proves a stunning visage in the center of Oslo.
3.
Tour the MunchMuseum.
Famous impressionist Edward Munch heralded from Oslo, and you can find a great collection of
his work in this museum.
4.
Take Life Easy in the Frognerparken. Located
towards the center of Oslo,
this sprawling green space is packed with sculptures and statues. It's a great
place for an afternoon picnic or game of football, weather permitting.
5.
Explore Bogstadveien. For a taste of the high life,
spend a few hours mooching around Bogstadveien – Oslo's trendiest neighborhood. Shopping and
drinking are excellent here, although beware the prices as they can be a little
steep to say the least!
6.
Island Hop in the Oslo
Fjords. The Oslo Fjord is a stunning place, full of
jaw-dropping cliff edges and icy clear water. Ferries connect Oslo with the various islands of the Fjord.
Swimming is a particularly popular activity for outdoor types who head here,
although due to the weather the water is only hospitable during summertime.
7.
Go Cross Country Skiing. Norway
is famous for its cross country skiing and Oslo is no exception. Holmenkollen is the
best area. If skiing isn't quite your think, the hiking trails here are also
excellent.
8.
Visit the HenrikIbsenMuseum. Norway's
famous realist playwright is the subject of extensive exhibitions here. Small
but perfectly formed, the museum is a treat for experts and amateurs alike.
9.
Tour the RoyalPalace. Tours around Oslo's
imposing RoyalPalace take place during summer. Book
ahead!
10.
Let your Hair Down During a Night Out in Oslo. Oslo's
nightlife is none too cheap, but it is vibrant and fun. Just for one night,
then, do as the locals do and hit a café or bar before moving onto an all-night
club. Great fun.
