10 Tips to Brighten Up Your Hall

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

The hall can be one of the darkest rooms in your home as it rarely has large windows and so often gets very little natural light. In many homes the hall is quite small as well as dark too. But you don't have to suffer having a dingy hall. Here are 10 ways you can use today to brighten up your hall:-

  1. No matter how small your hall it is not going to be helped if you let clutter gather there from your child's bicycle and school bag to three days worth of mail and newspapers. Clear it all out and make sure that everyone has a clear route from the front door.
  2. Cover over an unsightly radiator by using a radiator cover. You can then use this as a shelf for an attractive plant or piece of art work.
  3. If your hall is tall and narrow, re-balance the proportions by adding a dado and picture rail to break up the walls. Paint the area above the picture rail in a darker color to "bring down" the height of the ceiling. You can also add to the illusion of width by laying plank flooring across the width of the hall rather than along the length of the hall.
  4. If your hall is long and narrow, paint the wall furthest from your front door in a dark color as this will trick the eye into thinking it is nearer than it is. For a short hall, use a lighter color.
  5. If your hall has low ceilings use vertical striped wallpaper (or paint in vertical stripes) to increase the perceived height of the ceiling.
  6. Use lighter colors on walls to reflect any available light.
  7. Use large mirrors which reflect the space and make your hall seem larger.
  8. If your hall is small avoid adding furniture and try to use a cupboard off the hall, rather than the hall itself to hang coats and hats. If you have a bit of room however use a hall table with lamps to add welcome light and a small chair adds a nice touch.
  9. The smaller your hall, the more simply you need to decorate but in any hall use a few items with impact rather than a lot of small pictures to decorate your walls.
  10. When buying flooring for your hall consider pale tiling or alternatively a wooden or laminate floor in your hall rather than dark carpet to add light and provide a surface that is easily kept clean. An attractive entrance mat will help keep dirt out of your home provided you can train everyone to wipe their feet as they come in.
