Rock Stars that Love Literature

This is a list of some of the bands that took a fantasy/sci-fi and put it in a song.  There are some not so well-known groups and some mega stars in the mix.  I tried to find as many different groups as I could.  I hope all you nerds and music lovers enjoy this.

1.  The first on the list and one of my favorite songs is Ramble On by Led Zeppelin.  The song mentions "the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair" and "but Gollum and the evil one" from The Lord of the Rings.

2.  Blind Guardian; These guys are a German metal band from the 80's.  They had an album called Nightfall in Middle Earth.  The whole album is about the Silmarillion.

3.  Phish;  Prince Caspian.  This song lightly touches on one of the stories from the Chronicles of Narnia.

4.  Iron Maiden; To Tame a Land.  This song is a throwback to Dune by Frank Herbert

5.  Toad the Wet Sprocket;  The Hobbit on the Rocks.   Only the title of this song mentions the book but it comes from Tolkien's, The Hobbit.

6.  Rush; Rivendell.  This song is a ballad that represents the elven capital Rivendell from The Lord of the Rings.

7. Reliant K.  In Like a Lion (Always Winter)  The song came out shortly after the Narnia movie The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe came out.  It comes from C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe.

8. Radiohead; Paranoid Android:  I am not sure if this is a real reference.  Others say that this song is nod to Marvin the android from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

9.  Led Zeppelin gets another just because Robert Plant liked throwing The Lord of the Rings references in his songs.  Here are two from the group.  Misty Mountain Hop and Battle of Evermore.  Their music is really cool.

10.  Although, this is not rock it is probably the most blatant Hobbit reference I know of, and it is hilarious.  This is Leonard Nimoy's, The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.  This is just a great video.  Hope you like it.
