11 Natural Remedies for a Headache

Headaches are uncomfortable and nuisances that interrupt daily life. Over-the-counter medications are never too far out of reach. However, they can be harmful in the long run and become ineffective in the short.

The body adapts and builds a tolerance to over-the-counter medication that is being taken regularly. Your tolerance builds to a point where the healthy medicinal dosage no longer works. By avoiding the over-the-counter medicine, you will allow your tolerance to fall back to the level where the pill is fully effective. 

Here are 11 natural remedies for headaches:

11. Water

The majority of headaches are caused by dehydration. Drinking a large glass of water naturally remedies and prevents headaches.

Feverfew is a herbal natural remedy for headaches and also prevents recurring migraines.

9. Pressure points

Applying a pressured pinch on both sides of the skin between the index finger and thumb is a pressure point that relieves headaches.

8. Exercise

Exercise gets the blood flowing and eliminates toxins. Raising your heartbeat is vital to overall health. It is recommended for at least 30 minutes a day. When exercising, breathing rate increases, which delivers more oxygen throughout the body. Also when you exercise, the body eliminates toxins. 

7. Gatorade

Again focusing on the dehydration aspect of headache causes, Gatorade replenishes the body and reverses dehydration. Drinking a Gatorade can cure a headache quick. It is a highly effective hydrator. Dehydration is more than an absence of water. The body expels electrolytes, something water alone does not replenish. Other good natural sources of electrolytes are broccoli, bananas, and citrus fruits.

The compounds within ginger are able to block the synthesis of migraines and headaches. It is a natural pain reliever that also squashes a lot of negative symptoms, such as, nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach.

Massaging the temples and scalp delivers blood to the area and can relieve tension, another major cause of headaches. Taking a moment to relax and massage tension areas will go a long way in getting rid of a headache.

4. Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil is a cooling essential oil that relaxes tension held around the headache area. It can be massaged around the hairline, the back of the neck, and also inhaled for its relieving effects.

3. Lavender Oil

Lavender is famous for its soothing and relaxing effect. It can be applied just like the peppermint oil, around the scalp and behind the neck. Lavender oil can also be diffused for aromatherapy.

2. Rosemary Oil

Another essential oil, rosemary naturally relieves headaches. Massage onto the forehead or just as you would peppermint and lavender oil.

The active ingredient in cayenne pepper, capsaicin, blocks the nerve signals receiving pain. It is used within natural treatments for recurring, chronic headache sufferers.
