So you've picked up your copy of FIFA 14 and want to start a career mode, obviously you will want to sign some players to strengthen your squad. Signing a talented youngster for a small sum and bringing him through the ranks to become one of the best in the game is without a doubt one of the most satisfying things you can achieve on the FIFA 14 career mode. But with the new scouting system in place (I'm not a fan personally) it's difficult to know where to start, so I have compiled a list of FIFA 14 wonderkids to help get you started. There is one top pick in each position, so using this list you can create a team of incredible world beaters. The criteria I have set myself for this list is that all players must be aged 20 or younger, and the formation is a classic 4-4-2. But since everyone loves to play beautiful, attacking football I'm going to have the wingers pushed up and an attacking midfielder in there, and maybe juggle the strikers around so one of them is a centre forward instead of an out and out striker. This is the formation that has worked best for me in multiple teams on career mode, and tends to produce the most fluid team and the most goals. Now, on to the list!
Thibaut Courtois - Loaned at Atletico Madrid
For our goalkeeper we will choose the 20 year old Thibaut Courtois, who starts off in career loaned out to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea. Courtois already begins the career with an impressive overall ability of 84, making him good enough to walk straight into the majority of top division teams in the world. He has the potential to grow another 3 points to an overall of 87. He has quite incredible statistics for a goalkeeper of his age, with all major goalkeeping statistics being over 80 at the beginning of the game. The major drawback with choosing Courtois is the hefty price tag he can command right from the start. He has the potential to be the best goalkeeper on the game, and is already incredible, and as such you have to pay through the nose for him. However, if you have the budget, he is certainly worth it.
- Jack Butland
- Nicola Leali
- Christian Bonilla
Mattia De Sciglio - AC Milan
At right back for our team of FIFA 14 wonderkids the choice is an obvious one, namely because there is a real slim shortage of sub 20 right backs on FIFA 14. Mattia De Sciglio starts off at AC Milan in the career mode and is already a decent pick for mid table teams, with an overall ability of 77 at the beginning. He has the potential to grow another 8 points and ends up at 85 overall ability points. He is lightning quick and has good stamina, making him a great choice as he can terrorise tired defenders late into the game with his forward runs. He is also a decent short passer and crosser of the ball, as well as having his defensive abilities up to scratch. De Sciglio's durability and all round ability make him a great pick for both full back positions.
- Phil Jones
- Adam Matthews
Marcos Aoas Correa and Raphael Varane
In FIFA 14, there is quite a plethora of defensive talent waiting to be snatched up, these two are the best of the lot! Marcos Aoas Correa starts his career at the super rich Paris Saint-German and has the potential to be the best centre back on the game. Aged just 18, his starting ability is quite incredible for a centre back of his age, with 78 overall points, but his room for growth is even more astonishing. With the right nurturing Correa can end up with a total ability of 89, the best potential for a centre back on the game. Whilst not particularly tall for a centre back, standing at 6 feet tall, his acceleration and overall sprint speed make up for this, this can make him an invaluable sweeper, especially when coupled with his excellent marking and tackling abilities.
Raphael Varane is already making a big name for himself at Real Madrid, being a first choice centre back in the Galacticos at the age of just 18. Varane's starting ability is even better than Correa's, with an overall ability of 81 at the start of the game. His overall potential ability is slightly worse than Correa's, with him peaking at 88 points. Varane, unlike Correa, is a formidable presence in the air. Standing at 6"3, with fantastic aerial ability already him and Correa would make the perfect centre back pairing, covering every base at the centre of defence with their combined speed and aerial presence. Due to the nature of their starting teams, these defenders both command a hefty price tag, so if you don't have the budget I would suggest taking a look at the honourable mentions.
- Kurt Zouma
- Semih Kaya
Luke Shaw - Southampton
As with the right back position, left back is fairly slim pickings on FIFA 14 as far as wonderkids are concerned. However Luke Shaw from Southampton, with their brilliant youth academy (Think Gareth Bale, Earth's most expensive player), tops the list. He is truly one for the future, aged just 17 with a fairly mediocre 70 points as his starting overall ability, he comes into his own with the right nurturing. He has the potential to become the best left back on the game, with the chance to get to 85 overall ability. He has the whole physical package, with explosive pace coupled with a formidable aerial presence in comparison with most speedy full backs.
- Jetro Willems
- Alex Sandro Lobo Silva
- David Alaba
Paul Pogba - Juventuse
Already a first team player with Italian giants Juventus, Paul Pogba is an absolute beast of a central midfielder. Whilst he is classed as a defensive midfielder, his technical abilities are still quite brilliant for a defensive minded player. He starts off with an overall ability of 79, with the potential for growth up to 87, making him one of the best central midfielders on FIFA 14. Aged 19, he stands at a formidable 6"2 and has monstrous strength from the beginning, he is also good at sliding tackles and heading. Alongside this, his technical ability makes him a perfect deep lying defensive playmaker, or even a classic box-to-box midfielder. From the very beginning he has brilliant ability when it comes to short passing, long passing, heading, jumping, long shots and shot power. As he is a first team player for the European giants of Juventus, he does command a hefty price tag.
- Mateo Kovacic
- Tonny Vilhena
- Leon Goretzka
Centre Attacking Midfielder
Adryan Oliveira Tavares - Flamengo
One of my personal favourite FIFA players over the past few years' installments. Adryan, 18, starts his career at Flamengo in Brazil, and can effectively play in every attacking position. He is also one of those who you truly build up, his beginning overall ability is 70, and I have managed to get his overall ability up to 88 by the age of 23. He is also fairly cheap at the beginning, which is helpful for those of you starting further down the career ladder on FIFA 14. Adryan is one of those players who is the full package in terms of attacking ability, he is fast and good at dribbling, passing, finishing, and vision. He can also be employed on the right wing, left wing (my personal favourite) and centre forward positions.
- Angel Correa
- Lucas Piazon
- Julian Draxler
Zakaria Bakkali - PSV Eindhoven
Bakkali is one of the best wonderkids on FIFA 14, and is another player who can play all along the front line. He is also the youngest player in this list, starting the career mode at just 17 years of age, but even with his tender years he already has impressive statistics, with an overall ability of 73. As you may well guess, this makes his potential ability quite incredible, with a potential overall ability of 90, maybe even higher. Bakkali possesses explosive pace coupled with balance, agility, and dribbling ability. To add to this, he is also good at finishing, long shots, crossing, free kicks and long shots. With his starting ability, young age, and potential ability, Bakkali has the potential to lead your attacking threat for up to 15 years.
- Lucas Silva
- Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Stephan El Shaarawy - AC Milan
El Shaarawy is another of those players who can improve your team right from the very beginning of career mode, with an overall ability of 81 points at the age of just 19. Already being a starter of AC Milan, El Shaarawy is also another of those players who can be expensive at the start. Also, like Adryan and Bakkali he can also play all along the front line, with incredible pace and dribbling coupled with brilliant finishing from long and short range. El Shaarawy is more of a forward than Adryan, his passing isn't as good but his finishing is better, this makes him perfect to play on the left wing. El Shaarawy is right footed but is good on his left as well, he can absolutely terrorise defenders on the left wing, cutting in and taking a shot or taking it to the byline and whipping a cross in. His overall potential ability stands impressive at 87 and with him, Bakkali, Adryan, and Eriksen (to come) you can have an attacking quadruplet that can all play in each others' positions equally well.
- Armindo Tue Na Bangna
- Viktor Fischer
- Juan Manuel Iturbe
Christian Eriksen - Tottenham Hotspurs
Brought in to replace Gareth Bale, who Spurs sold to Real Madrid for a world record fee, Christian Eriksen is classed as an attacking midfielder, however I've found he works best playing just behind the striker in a centre forward position. Starting off aged 20 with an overall ability of 82, he can instantly improve your team with his pace, passing ability, creativity and finishing. He can them go on to become an absolute world beater with the correct nurturing, I have managed to get his ability up to an astounding 92 overall ability, making him one of the game's best players. Playing in a centre forward position allows him to get into scoring opportunities often (he has been top scorer for my Deportivo side for the past 3 seasons) whilst also allowing him to drop back and team up with my overlapping wingers and attacking midfielders to make use of his creativity and passing abilities. He also has a 5 star weak foot and is great at dribbling, when you have world class wingers and attacking midfielders you can allow them all to mix it up and play wherever they want.
- Victor Andrade
- Adem Ljajic
Anthony Martial - Monaco
Anthony Martial is another one of those players who is solely bought with the future in mind. He has mediocre starting statistics, starting the career mode with an overall ability of 63 points. However, his growth potential is huge, with a potential overall ability of 87 points. Martial is a strong and fast striker with good heading abilities and finishing abilities when he is fully developed, making him the fabled classic number 9. Due to his low starting ability, Martial can come quite cheap and be loaned out to clubs for a year or two to increase his game time. After this you should begin giving him the odd start here and there and bringing him on as a substitute often to help with his development. Soon you will have a brilliant striker on your hands and, with my previous suggestions, a quite incredible attacking force.
- Aleksandar Mitrovic
- Romelu Lukaku
- Ahmed Musa
So there you have it, a team of future world beaters. My aim was to create a list that was well balanced between current talent with potential so the players could fit into your first team straight away and players who were cheaper but still with world class potential. I think I have achieved this and with these players you could build a squad of true world beaters in every single position.
