12 Ideas for Staycations

By Edited Dec 20, 2013 1 0

1) Attend a Sporting Event

Going to a sporting event can be a great way to get away. Depending on your location, you might have several options for events. Baseball is a great option during the summer  and fall especially if your sports team is fortunate enough to make the playoffs. However, if you decide to go to a playoff game expect to pay more for a ticket.

Basketball and hockey are great games to attend as they move relatively fast. Personally, I never enjoyed watching hockey games on television but going to a game is a completely different experience.

Football is another great option but most of the games are played on Sunday so if your hopes for your staycation were just a weekend get away then going to a football game can eat up a whole afternoon. If you decide to go, you will have a great time as the atmosphere alone at football games is hard to beat.

I also recommend going to a game that you never have watched or played yourself. Apart from the sports mentioned above, try going to a soccer, volleyball, or tennis match. Going to different games will expose you to a different cultures and create special memories that will last a long time.

2) Go to a Farmer's Market

Farmer's markets have their own atmosphere and culture. Many of the vendors are willing to help teach you about their products and the differences of their product from something you would find in a grocery store aisle.  You might even make a few friends with the vendors.

Take time to go to a farmer's market and learn about organic foods. One of the cool things I learned is that if you eat honey from a local hive before the allergy season, you will not have the allergy problem later on in the season. You can't go wrong with eating healthier and farmer's markets are a great place to find the food to help achieve a healthy lifestyle.

3) Check into a Hotel and Go Shopping

The hotel choice is up to you. I just know from experience that spending the night somewhere other than your house can be very relaxing. I recommend choosing a place that you have never been before and just enjoy the newness of the experience.

Whether you decide to get a hotel in the city or maybe out in a rural country area, shopping is usually close. If you are in the city, you will find all kinds of places with a variety of products. Should you decide to stay out in the country, you might find antique or collectible shops.

I highly recommend doing this at least once throughout the year.

4) Treat yourself to a day of Pampering

Treat yourself and take an afternoon or morning and schedule a time at a spa. If you can't afford a spa then find a massage therapist. It is a great stress reliever and very relaxing. The benefits can be long term as we hold a tremendous amount of stress inside of our body and releasing this tension increases our health.

5) Rent a cabin and go hiking

Cabin rentals are pretty popular in certain parts of the country. The experience is very relaxing as it allows you to unplug from society for a little while. Many of these cabin rental places are surrounded by hiking trails.

Hiking is not only a great excerise but allows you to experience nature and the beauty that comes with it all. In our facepaced lives, walking through a forest or a field can be very relaxing as you hear the sound of the forest and wind wipping across the field.

Take a weekend or just a day if possible and go hiking.

6) Team Cooking Night

I will leave it up to you to determine how crazy you want to go with cooking. However, doing a team cooking night where the two of you are in the kitchen cooking a meal for each other is a great way to spend time together. You get the social interaction along with the intimacy and peace.

7) Visit a Museum

Museums are a great way to spend an afternoon away from home. There are many types of museums and you might be suprised the ones near you. I didn't realize for the longest time that a civil war museum was about 5 minutes from my house. I recently went to the museum and was taken back by the history and stories told within the walls of the building. The experience was very enjoyable and I look forward to discovering other museums nearby.

8) Go Camping

Maybe renting a cabin is not possible. Consider going camping during the more pleasurable seasons throughout the year. Camping can be a great experience as it is another way to get away from the overload of technology that pulls on us each day.

Roasting marshmallows and relaxing by the fire is what many people already thought of when reading this section. Camping creates memories and that is what you want to do on a staycation.

Be adventurous and go camping.

The video below is for beginners who have never gone camping before.

9) Picnic at a Park

A simple picnic on a sunny day is a great way to spend time and relax. Spread a blanket out and soak up the sun while catching up a some much needed reading. Fix a reasonable lunch and take it with you to a park.

You can be less than a mile from your house but feel like you are hundreds away.

10) Movie rental night

Lights, camera, action! Maybe going and renting a move is more your style. With the many options theses days of Amazon.com, Blockbuster express, Redbox, Netflix, or on demand movies you should be able to find a movie that you will both want to watch.

I recommend maybe going old school and find some classic movies that you never watched but received a lot of awards. Many of the classics are just as entertaining as the big explosion hollywood blockbusters of today.

11) Take a tour of your city

Just like going to a museum, taking a tour of your city will be very entertaining. Many of us Americans move often, so taking a tour will help enlighten us to the history surrounding our place.

Another option for a tour and this might sound weird but many military or civil war cemeteries give tours. These tours usually give details about the men and women who served. The tour will give you a new perspective on life and make you appreciate the sacrifices of others.

This video is an exmaple of a tour of New York City and Greenwich Village.

12) Go to an Amusement Park

The last recommended idea for a staycation would be going to an amusement park. Depending on the season, you might decide to go to a water park or more traditional park. These parks can be a little pricy so to save a few dollars search online to see if there are any coupons or deals running.

Going to an amusement park will take up the majority of the day so plan accordingly with food accommodations and bring sunscreen.
