27 Green Cleaning Tips

All of our cleaning from doing the dishes to keeping the air smelling fresh can be done using these green tips.  Most of the ones listed below are easy to do.  Just turn your thinking around a little and merge these green tips into cleaning habits. 

  1. Save 15 gallons of water by not rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher and save an average of 15 gallons of water per load.

  2. Skip the drying cycle of the dishwasher

  3. Use cloth towels instead of paper towels.  You can also cut up old clothing to use for cleaning cloths.

  4. Make sure to fill dishwasher, washer and dryer before using.

  5. Make window cleaner by mixing two ounces of vinegar with a quart of water.

  6. Avoid using the garbage disposal.  This uses a large amount of water.  Use a compost bin or the trash

  7. Use vinegar to loosen rusted bolts and remove calcium deposits.

  8. Use a natural air freshener such as opening a window or setting out a bowl of vinegar or baking soda to absorb odors.  You can use cider vinegar for a slight fresh smell.

  9. Have plants in the house to help with the air filtering

  10. Take clothes out of dryer right away to cut down on ironing.

  11. Use a reusable mop instead of the new style single use pad style.

  12. Sprinkle baking soda in the rug to help with odor control.  Let it sit in the rug for 15 minutes before vacuuming.

  13. Leave your shoes outside the house to avoid tracking in problems

  14. Use ¼ cup of vinegar in the washing rinse cycle to replace chemical fabric softeners

  15. Skip using the dryer by hanging clothes on a clothes line or rack. 

  16. Check vent on dryer to make sure it is working properly.

  17. Make drain cleaner by pouring half a cup of baking soda in the drain, then a cup of

    vinegar.  Cover the drain, wait 5 minutes, and then pour in boiling salt water.  Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain once a week to help keep the drain clear.
  18. Clean brass with lemon and salt.

  19. For dusting, use old socks.  Use vegetable oil with a little lemon in it for a furniture polish.

  20. Use baking soda in the refrigerator for both eliminating smells and cleaning up the spills.

  21. Clean coffee maker by running a pot of half water/half vinegar through it.

  22. Remove grease from a wood floor by freezing with an ice-cube.  This will let you scrape it off.  Then place an old rag over it and iron it.  The rag should pick up the grease.

  23. Use a mixture of water and vinegar to clean almost anything.  Mix it half and half in a bottle so you are always ready to go

  24. Clean windows with newspapers instead of paper towels.  You are re-using something before throwing it away, and will not need to buy paper towels.

  26. Clean your pillows by running them through the dryer once a month.  This will extend the life of the pillow

  27. Clean the microwave by cooking lemon juice and water in a bowl for 2 minutes.  This will loosen everything up, then you can wipe it easily off.
