A 27 inch LCD TV is perfect for small to medium sized rooms. They are more affordable than larger models but still provide a good viewing and gaming experience. For the best viewing experience, you will need to sit four to six feet away from the television set. Many of the major electronics companies have models in this size, such as Samsung and LG, along with smaller companies like ViewSonic. There are not a lot of 27 inch LCD TVs to review, so I am also including the most popular 26 inch televisions as well. This will give you a wider variety to choose from so you are able to get the HDTV that fits your needs.
Samsung LN26C450 26-Inch LCD HDTV
This is a 26 inch LCD TV. This is the diagonal measurement of the screen. Its other dimensions in inches are 18.8 x 25.5 x 8.7. It weighs 15 pounds. It has three HDMI slots. One is on the side and the other two are in the back. It also has a USB input on the side and a PC input on the back.
Great picture quality, especially for its small size. Most smaller TVs don't worry too much about having a great picture, but Samsung does put effort into their 26 inch models. It is HD at 720p. This isn't the highest resolution, but at this screen size you are unlikely to notice a difference so 720 is all that you need. Its refresh rate is 60 Hz. Its black levels are deep.
Decent sound. If you want really good sound in any television, you need to purchase a separate stereo system. With that in mind, the Samsung LN26C450 has pretty good sound. You'll want to play with the sound modes to find the one that works best for you.
Some ghosting is noticeable. Not everyone complains about this flaw, so most people don't seem to be bothered by that. Even those that complained about the ghosting seemed to be satisfied overall with their purchase.
LG 26LD350 26-Inch LCD HDTV
This is a 26-inch HDTV, measured diagonally across the screen. It weighs just under 14 pounds. In inches its dimensions are 3.1 x 26.1 x 16.7. It has one rear and one side HDMI input. Its one USB port is on the side.
This HDTV has a nice matte finish that lets you watch in various lighting conditions without a glare or reflections. This is especially good for people who watch TV in a room with lots of natural lighting.
It has a good picture quality. The dynamic contrast ratio is 50,000:1. This ensures that the colors are bright and the blacks are dark. It is 720p, which is high definition. It is better than standard definition and 480p, but not as good as 1080p. At this size, having 1080p isn't really necessary for a good picture.
The sound quality is also fairly good. I'm a big believer in hooking a TV to external speakers for the best sound, but not everyone likes to do that. If you will be listening to the sound through the television set you shouldn't have complaints with this one.
It is somewhat limited in features. It doesn't offer playback of MP3, JPEG, or DivX video. If you are just planning on watching TV, DVDs, and Blu-ray disks you probably won't miss these features. But if you were planning on playing DivX video, you'll need to look elsewhere.
You might prefer to spend a little bit more for a large size and extra features. Unfortunately, all 26 and 27 inch LCD TV models are going to be lacking in the features that are available for TVs that are 40 inches or more. For some people, paying extra makes more sense. However, if you want a television set that will fit into your current entertainment unit or is small enough for the bedroom, you aren't going to want to upgrade to a larger size.
ViewSonic VT2730 27-Inch LCD HDTV
This is a full 27 inch LCD TV when you measure it across the screen diagonally. The other dimensions are 18.3 x 25.4 x 8.9 inches and it weighs just over 15 pounds. This means that it will fit in many older entertainment units that are currently housing a CRT TV.
The best thing about the ViewSonic 27 inch LCD TV is probably the picture quality. It has a resolution of full 1080p, unlike the 720p that is offered by most of the competitors. Its dynamic contrast ratio of 100,000:1 is twice that as the LG 26LD350. It is true wide screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The price is very good for this HDTV. It tends to be cheaper than the big brands such as Sony, Samsung, and LG. Some people are hesitant to deal with a company that they aren't as familiar with, but there doesn't seem to be more problems with this brand than there are with others.
The sound isn't that great. This is of course a negative of most television sets, especially the smaller ones such as the 27 inch LCD TV. The best way to remedy the average sound quality is to hook it up to external speakers. If you don't want to do this, you can still get acceptable sound quality. Take the time to go through the settings and find the one that offers the best sound.
