3,649 NHL Games Represented in the 1974-75 OMJHL's Top 5 Scorers
The top five OHL (then the OMJHL) players in the 1974-75 race for the Eddie Powers Trophy all moved on to careers in the National Hockey League. The Eddie Powers Trophy is handed out each season to the Ontario Hockey League player with the most points during the regular season. The top five players in 1974-75 represent 3,649 regular season NHL games. One player appeared in over 1,000 NHL games but only one was a first round NHL draft pick.
Bruce Boudreau finished first and won the Eddie Powers Trophy in 1974-75. As a member of the Toronto Marlboros, Boudreau contributed 165 points on 68 goals and 97 assists. Bruce was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round of the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft, 42
Tim Young of the Ottawa 67’s finished with two less points than Boudreau in 1974-75. His 163 points were made up of 56 goals and 107 assists. Young is one of just 13 OHL players to total 100 or more assists in a single season. Tim was a first round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 1975, 16th overall. He played 628 NHL regular season games with the Minnesota North Stars, Winnipeg Jets and Philadelphia Flyers.
Dennis Maruk capped a great junior career with the London Knights by finishing third with 145 points on 66 goals and 79 assists. Maruk was a second round pick of the California Golden Seals in 1975. He played 888 NHL regular season games with the Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars and Washington Capitals. He still holds the Washington record for most assists and points in a single season.
John Tonelli, a teammate of Bruce Boudreau with the Toronto Marlboros, finished fourth with 135 points on 49 goals and 86 assists. Tonelli wasn’t drafted until 1977 when he went to the New York Islanders in the second round. John played in 1,028 NHL regular season games with the Islanders, Calgary Flames, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and Quebec Nordiques.
Doug Jarvis of the Peterborough Petes rounded out the top 5 with 133 points on 45 goals and 88 assists. Jarvis was a second round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft but never played for the team. Instead, he played 964 NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals and Hartford Whalers. Jarvis is best known as the NHL’s Ironman. All Doug’s 964 games were played in an unbroken span.
