3D Scanners And The Way They Work

By Edited Aug 14, 2016 0 0

3D scanning is a new and extremely useful technology that is used in the construction of 3D models for a number of applications and uses. A 3D scanner studies a real life object, location, person etc, and collects data and information about it. This information such as shape, color, density etc, is then used to create accurate and life like digital replicas.

3D scanning is used in many ways in our modern society. Many movies and video and computer games use 3D scanners to create accurate results and life like effects. There are many other fields other than the entertainment industry that make use of this technology as well. These include industrial design, prosthetics, engineering, and even quality control and inspection.

There are several technologies in place for creating 3D scanners. Each of course has its own set of advantages, disadvantages and features. These include aspects such as cost, quality, the ease of obtaining results etc. There are also a list of methods and techniques experts use to obtain the best results. In order to complete an accurate representation it is usually necessary to take many scans of an object or scene, sometimes even up to several hundred. This way you can be sure to capture the object from many angles and produce an accurate final product.

The two main kinds of 3D scanners are contact and non contact scanners. Within these two broad categories, exists several further specified categories. The contact and non contact scanners use different technology to produce their results.

Contact scanners need to touch the object in order to create an accurate picture. They take longer to produce results but are extremely precise. The drawback to this scanner is that the direct contact can cause risk to delicate, fragile or extremely valuable objects.

Non contact 3D scanners use light or sound to probe the area around an object and thus form a picture of it. The light reflects off the objects and helps to create the viewing. These can be used to create three dimensional models for a number of purposes.

3D scanners are complex and intricate and a thorough knowledge of how they work is necessary in order to operate them. They can be delicate and costly so they should be handled with extreme care. 3D scanning is helps or society in many ways. It can help increase effectiveness and accuracy when working with small machinery and parts, and can help to further advance knowledge of the way things work and how.
