This is a preventative home remedy. If you do this every week you will help prevent drain clogs from forming in the first place.

This is a really good one to use if you live in an older home with difficult pipes or if your home has a history of drain clogs. Just set a reminder to do this at the same time every week and it will not seem like a chore at all. The task of using a home remedy to prevent drains from clogging will be second nature and you will save yourself a world of trouble and annoyance down the road. An added benefit is that your drains will smell nicer. If you have smelly drains this is a good home remedy to use.


  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup table salt
  • 1/4 cup cream of tartar
  • 1 cup boiling water

Add all the ingredients together except for the hot water and mix thoroughly. Pour them into a clean jar and cover it. This will give you enough of the mixture to use for a month and it will keep well in a cool dark cupboard. Just make sure you label it so you don't confuse it with cooking ingredients.

When you want to use this, pour about 1/4 cup of the remedy into your drain. Now add the boiling water and wait 10 seconds. Run cold water through the drain. All set, if you do this once a week it will really help keep your drains clear of clogs and bad smells!

Homemade Drain Cleaner #2

This home remedy will clear up a drain clog quite effectively.


  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of vinegar

Tip the baking soda into the drain first, and then the vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar together cause a foaming reaction. Replace the drain cover but not too tightly – leave it a bit loose. After three to five hours, run some water through the drain and see if the clog has cleared.

Homemade Drain Cleaner #3

If your clog is happening in the kitchen sink there is a chance that grease is clogging up the drain. Maybe somebody poured grease down the drain or you have just been washing too many greasy dishes. This home remedy is really good for clearing up this kind of clog.


  • 1/2 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1 liter of boiling water

Pour the salt and baking soda down the drain. Followed that up with the boiling water. Grease clogs can be tough so you will want to let this one sit as long as possible, at least 5 hours, overnight if possible.
