3 Influential Hip Hop Groups You Need To Listen To

By Edited Oct 17, 2015 1 1

A lot of people write off hip hop and some stupid genre of music that is only for little tween girls.  That’s what the most of the trash on the radio makes you believe anyway.  If you want to listen to real hip hop and open yourself up to a cool, creative style of music you need to dig a little deeper than turning on hot 97.1 and listen to Lil Wayne latest trash.  These a three of the greatest hip hop groups in no particular order.

  1. A Tribe Called Quest

Originating in Queens, this hip hop group really changed the game for the better.  Comprised of three members, Q-tip, Phife Dawg, and DJ Ali Shaheed, they use a lot of jazz samples in their work.  Their style is really laid back and chill.  If you listen to them you’ll know exactly what I mean.  With classic tracks like “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” and “Electric Relaxation” and their tight album “The Low End Theory” they are really one of the groups that originated hip hop.

  1. The Wu Tang Clan

Coming from all over New York but mainly Staten Island, the Wu Tang Clan is one of the greatest hip hop legends of all time.  They consist of nine members: Rza, Gza, Method Man, Raekwon the Chef, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and The ODB.  With nine people you would think there would be at least a few of them who a slacking behind the rest.  Not with the Wu Tang Clan.  Every single one of them is a solid artist and they all proved that by making independent albums.  They have a dirty sounding style with hard drum breaks and scratchiness of their records.  In my mind they have the title for the greatest hip hop album ever with “Enter the 36 Chambers”.  If you’re looking for new hip hop groups to listen to this is definitely one to check out.

  1. The Beastie Boys

Consisting of Mike D, MCA, and Ad Rock, these New York City artists have been doing their thing since 1979 when they started out as a hard core punk band.  They eventually began doing hip hop in 1984 but you can still here that punk influence in their style.  They are the originators of a style that led to other great groups like Rage Against the Machine.  With classic songs like Intergalactic, Sabotage, and No sleep till Brooklyn, they always come with a crazy hype style of music.  They are still putting out music today and their last album was Hot Sauce Committee Part 2.

So you see hip hop is not what the radio makes it out to be.  Don’t write it off because it really is listenable if you know the groups to listen to.  If you like the groups I refer to drop a comment!  Thanks for reading.
