3 Simple Treats to Bake

Always have some of these easy treats on hand for those unexpected visitors!

Guests can sometimes arrive on short notice. When there is little time or you simply have little motivation, you can still provide home-cooked treats using these easy recipes. Each recipe only takes around 30 minutes to complete. Bake some delicious shortbread biscuits, jam tarts or ANZAC slice!

Tarts and Biscuits

Shortbread Biscuits


2 ½ cups plain flour
½ cup caster sugar
150g butter, diced
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
1 - 2 tablespoons of water

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Place the flour and sugar into a bowl.
  3. Add the butter and use your fingertips to blend the ingredients. Alternatively, you can use an electric mixer.
  4. Add the vanilla and water and roll the mixture into a ball of dough.
    Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1cm thick.
  5. Cut into shapes using cookie cutters.
  6. Place on a lined tray, leaving room for spread.
  7. Cook for 15 minutes.

    Optional: Decorate the biscuits with caster sugar or sprinkles before cooking (as pictured).


Shortbread biscuits


Jam Tart Recipe


2 ½ cups plain flour
110g butter, cubed
2 tablespoons sugar
2-3 tablespoons very cold water
½ cup strawberry jam


  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. Place the flour, sugar and butter in a bowl.
  3. Using your fingertips, rub the butter through the flour and sugar until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. Add the water and mix using a flat bladed knife.
  5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 2 - 3mm thick.
  6. Wrap with cling wrap and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  7. Cut rounds of the dough using a cookie cutter and place in a patty cake tray.
  8. Add about 1 teaspoon of jam to each tartlet.
  9. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes until pastry is lightly browned.


Optional: Change the flavour of jam to your favourite! Try apricot, blackberry or raspberry! If you don’t want to make your own shortcrust pastry, you can replace it with the store bought version for an even easier recipe!


Jam Tarts


Anzac Slice Recipe


1 cup rolled oats
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup desiccated coconut
½ cup plain flour
100g butter
2 tablespoons golden syrup


  1. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  2. In a saucepan, heat the butter and golden syrup for 1 – 2 minutes until butter is melted.
  3. Place oats, sugar, coconut and flour in a bowl and add the butter and golden syrup mixture.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Press into a slice pan.
  6. Bake for 20 - 30 minutes until golden.

Yes, this one is less time consuming because it cooks all in one tray rather than making seperate biscuits. I love them too! :)
