We have all been lied to by our bosses,  lovers and friends. It has even been said that lies can keep a marriage together. But no one likes to be lied to and yet it would seem that the world works on lies. There is a little white lie for everything; “No that dress does not make you look fat”, or “Yes honey your awesome in bed”. What would happen is these situations if the truth were to be told? Lies are the grease that keeps our society chugging along. Why the government can be accused of running the country on lies. Our previous Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chretien, won his election by holding up a red bound book and saying “all the answers are in the red book!”, however later on it was revealed that at the time the book was full of blank pages. Well played Jean Chretien, well played. There are many kinds of liars out there, so would you like to know when someone is lying to you? Well here are 3 tips that can help you spot a liar.

 Watch their body language:

  • Their physical expressions will be stiff and limited with very few arm and hand movements. Also when a person is lying their hand and arm movements will be toward their own body, taking up less space.

  • They avoid making eye contact.

  • Their hands will touch their face, mouth and throat. Scratching behind the ear or nose can be an indicator is someone is lying.

  • They smile with their mouths and not their eyes

Watch how they communicate:

  • A liar is uncomfortable facing the person they are lying too, and will turn their head or body away.

  • Sometimes they will place objects like books, coffee cups or other things between themselves and you.

  • Usually a guilty person will get defensive while someone innocent will go on the offensive

  • Sometimes liars will avoid answering the question by using indirect statements. Implying their answer instead of denying something completely.

  • They may speak more than usual, giving you a lot of unnecessary details and seem uncomfortable with pauses or silences in the conversation.

Are they evasive?:

  • They may try to use humor or sarcasm to avoid a subject.

  • Which way do their eyes look towards when they are answering you? Up and to the left usually indicates that they are using their mind to come up with a new answer or story. Looking up and to the right indicates that they are accessing a memory that already exists and not making something up.

Of course just because someone exhibits one or more of these signs does not automatically mean that they are lying. You should compare the above behavior with a persons usual behavior whenever possible. Also follow what your instincts are telling you, if they are saying that the person you are talking too is a liar than its likely to be true. So pay attention and watch for the little things that will give them away to be a liar, liar pants on fire!
