How do I maintain my exterior windows and doors?

First, why should you maintain your windows, when you just bought new ones? Good maintenance of your windows and doors will help them keep their original color, shape and strength for many years.

If your windows and doors surface is timber and it’s time for cleaning, it is a good idea to also have a look for small cracks and gaps and openings in the paint coating surface. Here you should particular attention pay to the windows and doors facing south and west because these are more exposed to the sun and general wear by the weather. Even a small crack in the paintwork will allow damp to penetrate the timber, and rot could start.

If the protective surface / paint coat is damaged (cracks or fissures through to the wood) we recommend that you repair the damage immediately. If you are not sure how to repair the damage, you should seek professional advice. The advice is to go over all windows with a paintbrush and repair the surface cracks and crevices where needed once every year or more often if needed.

It’s also recommended that you wash the frames and sashes a couple of times every year.  This way you wash off dirt and other kinds of impurities, which eventually can degrade the protective surface. Use water with a mild cleaner added.

How to treat yellow extracts from knots?

You will primarily experience knots if your windows and doors are from 2009 and before or if they are budget doors and windows. From 2010 and forward most modern window and door manufactures will let you order windows and doors with finger-joint timber. This means knots have been removed from the used timber.

Because wood is a living material resin extraction from knots may occur, but can be corrected:

  1. Take a clean cloth soaked with ethanol and wipe lightly on the resin extraction.
  2. Rinse with clean water.

Resin that has already crystallized can be scraped. If the paintwork is damaged in the process, you should sand down the area with fine sandpaper and repaint.

If you regularly keep an eye on and remove any resin extract it should not be necessary to scrape off any crystallized resin.
