It’s practically a cliché to say that a book is life-changing. However, I created this list in all sincerity. Each one of these books has had a significant impact on my life.

What books have you read that changed your world-view? I would love to know. Make sure to leave a comment below.

Here are four books that have deeply resonated with me.

1. The Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence

I believe that this was the first personal development and/or self-help book I ever picked up. Because of former CD Baby founder Derek Sivers, I found out about personal development blogger Steve Pavlina. Because of Steve Pavlina, I began to embark on my own personal growth journey. Because I began that journey, I started getting back into books, and The Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence was one of the first I bought.

Like most people, I didn’t read a lot after finishing college. I am truly grateful that I got back into the habit, however, as there are so many things to be learned from books that you simply will not find elsewhere.

The two things that stay with me from this book to this day are:

  1. I learned what neuroticism actually means. It’s when people project their hopes for your life onto you. Manipulation is usually subtle.
  2. I came to believe that, in this moment, I am doing the very best I can do. It’s only when my consciousness expands that I am able to do better than I am right now. For me, this is a very empowering belief.

This booked helped me to adopt a more positive attitude.

2. Desire: The Journey We Must Take to Find the Life God Offers

If you don’t believe in God, or if you’re not spiritual, Desire may not be your cup of tea. However, for me, this book seeded several foundational beliefs that I continually refer back to. The only reason for that, I believe, is because there are great truths within this text.

First, and perhaps most importantly, heaven is not an eternal sing-along in the sky. Now that’s a relief. If all you have to look forward to as a Christian when you pass away is singing to God (or singing at God), what’s the point of the Christian life?

Secondly, your desires point to the dreams deep within your heart. They are not wrong. A lot of people (a lot of Christians, anyway) feel guilty about what they want. You want what you want because God made you that way. Wow.

The book also included a link to several free downloads; audio files from the Desire seminars. These sessions were just as powerful as, if not more than, the book itself.

3. The Go-Giver: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea

This is a recent addition to my favorite book list, and I simply cannot explain the sense of elation I felt after reading The Go-Giver. It expands on everything I already believed about giving and success. Of course, I still had to ask myself: am I actually living out my values? Not a bad question to ask yourself from time to time.

The Go-Giver brought it all into sharper focus for me. It’s a story that talks about how success is achieved through giving. It goes contrary to what many people believe about climbing ladders and stepping on others to get ahead. Winning in business at anyone’s expense does not resonate with me one bit. This book points to how achievement happens through putting others before yourself.

This is more than a business idea. It can be a way of life.

4. The Alchemist

This is a book I purchased because Will Smith was talking about it. Despite much criticism, Smith is someone who has succeeded in a variety of different mediums in the entertainment arena, and I have enormous respect for him.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. I was studying the Law of Attraction when I discovered it, and it came into my consciousness as I was going deeper into that way of thinking. I had no way of knowing what its contents would hold.

As it turns out, The Alchemist is a beautifully written story about a boy, Santiago, who embarks on a personal journey to go after his Personal Legend. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. I finished the bulk of it in two or three sittings.

I felt an overwhelming sense of peace when I finished the book. Quite frankly, I felt like a different person. This book has impacted my personal spiritual journey in ways I simply cannot comprehend.
