What Are Resistance Bands?
Resistance bands are elastic, rubber tubes with handles used for fitness and exercise. The color of the band usually indicates its resistance. Also, some handles are detachable for ease of use allowing you to combine or switch between multiple bands. They are similar to free weights in that they build muscle, increase muscle strength, and burn fat. So if they are the same, then why buy them? Here are a few reasons why I bought a set of resistance bands:
1. Gravity vs. Free Motion
The resistance from free weights comes from fighting gravity, while resistance from bands comes from the bands themselves. That is why many of the movements in resistance band exercises are similar to natural movements we may experience in our daily lives. There have also been studies showing how athletes have increased their bat swing, pitching arm, punches, ducking and weaving, and many other motions used in sports by incorporating resistance bands in their workout routines. Why? Because there is an increased motion with bands that free weights do not have.
The cost of resistance bands is fairly cheap compared to free weights. Plus easier to carry home once you buy a set! I bought a set of 3 resistance bands with detachable handles for about $20. It was a decent deal, but I should have done my internet homework before making an impulse buy.

3. Easy Transport and Storage
One of the major advantages resistance bands has to free weights is its portability and storage. They take up very little room and can be stored in the closet, underneath the bed, or even in a drawer . You can carry them around easily around the house or even take them with you when you travel. Whether you are on a business trip or a faraway vacation, resistance bands are your own portable gym. They can be easily rolled up and stored in a backpack or luggage for easy transportation as opposed to free weights.
4. Good for All Levels of Fitness
When we think of bodybuilders or weight lifters we think of strong men with bulging muscles. However, there is a diverse group of people to consider when it comes to fitness. Resistance bands are great for beginners who do not have the muscle strength to lift heavy weight or who workout alone and may not have a spotter. They're perfect for older adults or the elderly who may want to get back into shape but cannot life free weights anymore or who may suffer from joint issues. Resistance bands are versatile for all levels of fitness.
So should you throw away your free weights for resistance bands? Absolutely not! Both have their advantages and disadvantages but it mainly comes down to your personal preference and fitness level. I believe it's important to implement both into your workout routines to increase your performance and fitness. Give it a shot and buy a set of resistance bands. They're cheaper, portable, and an alternative to traditional free weights. Over time you'll see the benefits of resistance bands just as much as free weights and create dynamic workout routines that will keep your mind and body engaged with new results.
