4 Steps to a Hassle Free Moving Day

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Moving day can be stressful to say the least.  Fortunately, the entire process can be made much easier with the correct approach.  By identifying the situations which tend to be the most stressful and cause the most problems, you can find ways to avoid them.  Here is a quick look at four simple steps that can help you through a hassle free moving day.

1.    Plan Ahead
The first thing the need to do is create a plan of action.  A lot of people get so caught up with the big issues, that the small ones are what really become a problem.  For example, you probably already have a pretty good idea about renting a moving truck or using a portable storage unit as well as a general idea about how the day will go.  When creating your moving plan is important to take a look at the small things.  For example, you need to make sure that your utilities are taking care of and that you have the keys to your new residence before you actually move.  Another way to make things easier is to designate a “packing room”, so that your entire house doesn't feel like it is in chaos.  Additionally, you should always pack “first night boxes”.  These are the boxes that you need to get into immediately.  This can include things like basic kitchenware, betting, and a change of clothes.

2.    Make Things Easy on Yourself
Another way to increase your odds of a hassle free moving day is to find ways to eliminate the most stressful parts of the process.  In most cases, this is the actual loading and unloading of your stuff.  Hiring a moving company may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it isn't much more expensive that buying your friends lunch and dinner to get them to help – plus, it's a lot easier.  Another option is to use a portable storage unit because it will allow you to load and unload your items at your own pace.  One of the biggest stressors on moving day is the speed at which everything happens.  You wake up in one place and fall asleep in the other.  If you think about it, that's a lot to do in one day.  By hiring someone to take care of the most difficult part of the process, everything will seem much easier.

3.    Get Comfortable With the Equipment You Will Be Using
Driving a giant moving truck across the city or state can be an extremely stressful situation if you are not comfortable with it.  This is one of the reasons that portable storage units became popular in the first place.  If you want to get all of your moving done in a day or two, a portable storage unit may not be an option.  The next best option is to hire a driver or pay the movers to drive it for you.  If you are just moving across town then you will likely be able to find someone to drive your rental truck for as little as $20 using a classified ad website like Craigslist.

4.    Hire a Cleaning Service
A final way to make your move much easier is to hire a cleaning service.  This is especially true if you are moving out of a residence that you rented rather than owned.  There's nothing worse than getting everything moved into your new place only to have to go back to your old residence and clean.  Maid services are normally very reasonable and the best part is that many of them will have a package tailored specifically for people moving out of rental units.  They know exactly what to clean in order to get your maximum deposit back and can offer very competitive rates.
