4 Tips for Effective Long Term Weight Loss

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Thousands of people struggle with their weight every day; others have just given up. But weight loss systems, like Nutrisystem and Weight Watchers Canada, have been in the business of helping people live healthier lifestyles for 30 to 40 years. Why waste your time trying to figure out where your last diet went wrong when the information and support you need is already out there? Most people who lose weight on their own gain it back within three to five years, but a proven program can help you set informed, realistic goals, reach them and make the results last a lifetime. Check out these tips for getting you on the right road.

1. Establish a Foundation

Many people blame a lack of willpower for their weight-loss failures. Online support systems serve as a strong foundation when you feel old habits start creeping back up on you. Most online weight loss sites and companies provide professional counseling, in addition to online communities of other people to which you can relate, forums and libraries full of great diet ideas, exercises and low-fat, low-sugar recipes to use at home.

2. Modify Your Bad Behavior

While it's great to have a support system, you can't always count on other people to bail you out of bad decisions or get you up and moving. That's why many online weight loss programs also encourage clients to change their behavior and end the bad habits that put long-term success at risk.

3. Put Good Stuff Inside

The problem with fitting in nutritious foods on a daily basis is that most people need a number of options that can fit easily into their busy lives. It's a lot easier to grab a bag of chips or a fast-food burger than to pack a nutritional meal--but it doesn't have to be. One good way to eat more fruits and vegetables is to pack snack bags of baby carrots, broccoli and grapes, or a piece of fruit, like a banana or apple, into your purse or briefcase. Try to eat several smaller meals throughout the day. A very important rule: Cutting out the "bad" foods entirely can backfire on even the most dedicated person. Look for sensible alternatives or eat sugary, salty or fatty foods only in moderation.

If you lack time to plan your meals, or you're looking for a quick fix, most online weight loss programs now deliver entrees and snacks, as well as daily supplements and vitamins, direct to your door. Just grab and go!

4. Keep Your Body Moving

Maintaining a daily log of your activity level is just as important as getting the vitamins and nutrition your body needs. If you've been a couch potato for a long time, it's always a good idea to see your doctor before starting any serious exercise program. Otherwise, just try to get your body moving, whether it's walking, running, swimming, yoga, lifting weights or any other moderate activity. The goal is to get your heart rate up and keep it there for 30 to 40 minutes, three to four times a week.
