3 Tips to Find Good Writing Desks

Finding the right desk can be difficult.

Many people are surprised just how many different types of writing desks there are available for purchase.  While some people think of the traditional big oak or mahogany desks of old that exuded power and authority, and were often a status symbol, this only begins to scratch the surface of what is out there and available.  Before jumping in head first, it's always important for individuals to stop and do some research before making a final decision.  With that in mind, this article will share four tips for finding the ideal writing desk.

Tip #1: Decide on the exact function of the writing desk.  One of the best ways to narrow down your options is to decide on the exact function of the desk.  Is it just to show off and to write letters and cards while keeping track of mail and bills?  Then a desk with a hutch or writing secretary will be fine.  If you're doing a lot of computer look, you need a more modern desk that has plenty of space to access wires, outlets, and space to put the computer itself.  Deciding on the function helps limit the options.

Tip #2: Shop auctions, estate sales, and flea markets. This might seem like a strange bit of advice at first, but many small town auction houses and estate sales can lead to really nice pieces of furniture, including writing desks, and for prices that are far lower than what you're going to pay for an inferior brand new desk.  Shopping around never hurts, and you want to make sure these are on the shopping list, as well.

Tip #3: Think ahead. This is critical if you might be doing a lot of moving in your life or in the near future.  A big heavy oak desk that stands the test of time might look good, but if you know you're going to move frequently over the next few  years, it's also going to be a huge hassle to move around.  People in this situation should settle for a smaller functional model that is also lighter and easier to move.

These three tips just scratch the surface, but by following these any shopper is more likely to end up with a writing desk that fits their needs perfect.
