Are you considered lazy? Do you find it impossible to get the motivation you need to achieve your goals? Laziness can get in the way of every aspect of your life. You miss out on the career you want, the partner you desire and the things in life that make it worth living. It creeps up on you and the next thing you know there is a permanent divot in the couch and the buttons on the remote control are worn off. There are ways to overcome this and get what you want out of life. With some practice and commitment on your part you can overcome laziness, increase your motivation and get the most out of your life.  Normally we are moving toward something or away from something at all times; for example moving away from pain or moving towards pleasure.  We either want something, or we are repulsed by it; like a magnet either attracts objects to it or pushes another magnet away. Understanding these two forces are critical to your ability to use them for self motivation.  So here are four simple steps to overcome laziness.

  1. Pleasure or pain: You have to ask yourself “what am I trying to avoid?”  What is it that you don’t want and be very clear about your answer?  Are you trying to avoid the pain of doing that chore or are you trying to avoid missing the pleasure of your favorite TV show? The answer may give you some insight as to why you tend to avoid things you should be doing; like the dishes or walking the dog.  Find out what the consequences are of not doing that action and use that as a motivator.
  2. A goal: Ask yourself what is it that you are in fact aiming for; what is your overall goal in the situation. Think about what the best possible outcome there is if you manage to get up the steam and take action.  Thinking about the possible rewards is a great motivator to taking action in the present.  So think about what you want to happen and what is required to get it done.
  3. The next step: What is the next step that you can take in order to get closer to your goal? It could be as simple as going into the kitchen and grabbing the garbage so you can take it out. I could also be the first in a line of steps that gets you that new job or partner that you have had your eye on. Do not focus on every step along the way unless you are making a checklist; simply look at the next thing you need to do in order to get closer to your goals. If, for example, you want a better job, then next step may very well be to update your resume. All you have to do is find out what the next step is going to be and simply take that step.
  4. Repeat: You simply repeat the whole process over again from the beginning to this final step. Each time you work your way through the steps you will inevitably find yourself moving toward a goal.

So you can see that if you very simply follow the above steps you will be able to attain your goals. Simply go from step one: remember what it is you’re trying to avoid. Step two: Be clear about what you can gain by taking action and step three: Finding out what the next step is toward your goal and simply taking it. Then simply repeat the steps over again for each time you need to clarify what your next step is towards your goal. Keep doing this on a daily basis; every day simply taking one step toward your goal or goals. If you are able to move just one single step towards your goal every single day then you will get there. It has been said that “the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”, and continues with every step thereafter until you have reached the end of your journey. Remembering that goals and achievements take time and require many steps between where you are now and where you want to be. The genius is being able to identify each and every step along the way until you get that job, life partner or movie deal! Having a powerful goal or vision for your future is more powerful than trying to avoid doing something; so try to see where you want to be and then you can see how to get there. Your dream can be so powerful that it pulls you toward it and then the process will become effortless. So take it one step at a time every day; then you will be able to overcome laziness and achieve the goals you want in life!
