5 College Degrees that Don't Pay

By | 4 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

A college education often makes a lot of promises that it can't keep; a high paying career, job security, and a diploma with your name emblazoned on it that guarantees a life full of success. There are a few college degrees that are worth the cost of tuition and effort, and there are those that are not. Here are a list of the college degrees that are most likely to be meet with low demand, low pay career options.

History
Sure, it's a wildly interesting subject, but it will likely just lead you to dead ends when it comes time for job search after college graduation. Even when you do excel with this degree, you should expect to turn around and start teaching the subject to other future history teachers. Unless this idea appeals to you, make this educational plan a thing of the past.

Psychology
Oh, psychology; the intriguing science of why we behave the way we do. This bachelors degree will likely land you in a stressful job where you'll be pushing papers and making a couple of dollars an hour over minimum wage. Even a Masters in the subject only bumps the pay up ever so slightly. One has to be passionate for the cause, not the cash, to feel any sense of reward with careers within this degree.

Philosophy
There's nothing wrong with the degree, but one needs to think long and hard about what they will do to support themselves after college days are over. Unless you have a career or long term goal in mind, the tuition and effort that this degree requires may be fruitless.

Sociology
Like psychology, sociology is easy to absorb because it is so fascinating. However, do not be surprised at the lack of well paying jobs available to this degree upon graduation.

Art
Why is it that all of the fun majors lead to low paying career options? There are few people that can work a Bachelors in art to their advantage, but most graduates will find themselves in unrelated, low paying jobs. If choosing this major, make sure you have a solid backup plan for a career to support yourself after college.

Any college degree can be profitable; it often has less to do with the type of Bachelors degree and more with how you market yourself. Go to college for what you are passionate about, but not without first taking a realistic look at the expected wage and job outlook.

I think you are right if you are only getting a bachelors degree and stopping your education. There are many people with a liberal arts undergrad who go on to get law degrees, MBAs and other graduate degrees and do well financially. Also there are still firms that value a liberal arts education and train people in varying fields that make good incomes.

Psychology is good as a second degree, especially for supplementing Marketing degree.
