5 Common Signs You May Be A Diabetic And Not Know It

By Edited Aug 30, 2016 0 0

1. Going To The Bathroom More Often

Have you noticed that you are drinking an excessive amount of water lately? Excessive thirst and increased urination are the more familiar signs and symptoms of diabetes, but do you know why this happens? When you have diabetes, there will be an accumulation of sugar in your blood which will cause your kidneys to work harder to filter and absorb this sugar. If the kidneys can not do their job properly, this will lead to an accumulation of excess sugar. As a result, the sugar will be excreted into your urine along with fluids being drawn from your tissues. Thus, you will feel the need to urinate more frequently due to this fluid loss. This fluid loss will cause you to feel thirsty and you may increase your need for fluids because you may be dehydrated.

2. Harder To Read The Daily Newspaper

Blurred vision is another symptom of diabetes, but many may associate their change in vision due to aging. You may not be aware that diabetes can impair your ability to focus. Again, the sugar will cause fluid to be drawn from tissues, such as your lenses of your eyes. The lens function is to focus light onto the back of the eye (retina). As time progresses, a person may experience vision loss and blindness due to damage of the blood vessels in the eye.

3. Feeling Extremely Tired Lately

You may be thinking you are tired all the time due to stress at work or family obligations, but fatigue is another symptom you may not have associated with diabetes. As stated earlier, if you are feeling thirsty you may be dehydrated. Dehydration is when the amount of water leaving the body exceeds the amount the body retains. You may feel a little weak. In addition, if your body has not been able to utilize sugar properly, it will not have the fuel or energy it needs to carry out your daily activities. Thus, you feel tired and drained.

4. Dropped A Pants Size

Most people think dropping a size or two is great, but it is more important to know the reason behind this sudden change in weight. Did you change your diet lately? Have you increased your activity level? If you are experiencing unexplained weight loss, then you may want to think about some of the other symptoms mentioned earlier. When you have frequent urination, this can lead to loss of calories and weight fluctuations.

5. Skin Appears Discolored

Discoloration of the skin is a symptom to watch out for because it is a symptom of prediabetes. Prediabetes is a condition when your blood glucose levels are higher than normal levels, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. However, prediabetes is important to monitor because it is a risk for Type 2 diabetes. Darkened areas of the skin such as on the elbows, knees, knuckles, and armpits are seen in many people with prediabetes[1].
