Sandwiches are a staple in the American diet. They also happen to be my favorite food. I have made numerous sandwiches in my time, from the messy leftover Thanksgiving hoagie to the simple PB&J. I found that over time I became more inventive with my sandwiches and used a myriad of expensive ingredients. I thought that this excessive combination of ingredients were necessary, but I was wrong. High quality food can be created with a few household ingredients. So I threw away my hummus and sprouts and set out to make a list of delicious subs that require only five ingredients. I have prepared and tried many of these simple but tasty sandwiches, and my five favorites can be found below.

The Classic

  • Wheat bread
  • Provolone cheese
  • Turkey
  • Dijon mustard
  • Spinach

The dijon mustard gives this original sandwich the extra kick that it needs. Place the spinach below the mustard if you are packing this one to go to prevent the bread from getting mushy. After that, layer on the rest of the ingredients!

Breakfast Buddy

  • Wheat bread
  • 2 eggs (scrambled)
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Avocado (mashed and salted)
  • Frank's hot sauce

This sandwich makes a good on-the-go breakfast but is perfect to enjoy any time of day! Scramble the eggs over low heat and add salt and pepper. While they are cooking, mash an avocado with a fork and add a dash of salt. Once the eggs are 90% done to your liking, sprinkle some cheddar cheese on top of them and turn the heat off. Let them sit for a couple minutes or until the heat retained in the pan and eggs melts the cheese. Then, spread the avocado on one side of the bread and put the eggs and cheese on top. Add hot sauce to your liking!

PB&J 2.0

  • Wheat bread
  • Cream peanut butter
  • Strawberry jelly
  • Vanilla granola
  • Sliced banana

Start by making your typical PB&J sandwich with peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other. Then, put the sliced banana on the peanut butter side and sprinkle the granola on the jelly side for an added crunch. Smash the sandwich together and enjoy! If you want to splurge and spend an extra couple dollars you can try this sandwich with almond or cashew butter too. The ingredients work so well together because of the sweet and salty combination.

  • Wheat bread
  • Buffalo chicken
  • Provolone cheese
  • Red onion
  • Ranch

This is a great option for game day. You can assemble the sandwich in any order that you wish. Use the ranch as dipping sauce and cook the red onion a little beforehand if you want it to have less of a bite. These can also be cut up into bite size pieces to make a great buffalo sandwich appetizer.

Leftover Thanksgiving

  • Leftover dinner roll(s)
  • Turkey
  • Gravy
  • Stuffing
  • Cranberries

This is a delicious, hearty sandwich. A perfect option to energize you for all the Black Friday shopping ahead. Cut the dinner roll(s) in half and stuff in the all turkey, gravy, stuffing, and cranberries you can handle.

These sandwiches make a great meal whether you are enjoying them at home or on the go. If you want to take your sandwich to the next level, I recommend using a panini press to get it nice and toasty.
