5 Easy ways to save money around your home

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

If you are looking for ways to reduce your household budget, it may be necessary to get creative. You can easily find ways to save a few dollars here and there, and eventually those savings will add up to substantial figures. Don't be afraid to experiment with new ideas. Just try them out one at a time. This will help ease the impact of the changes to the lifestyle you have become accustomed to!

Switch to powder formularies

Dishwasher and laundry detergent are both expensive purchases at the grocery store. Many people prefer the liquid versions of both detergents because they are easy to manage and dissolve better in water. Today most of the powder versions of dishwasher and laundry detergent have been improved tremendously. They are much cheaper than the liquid alternatives and most will perform every bit as well!

Tip: When using dishwasher and laundry detergent always pay special attention to the fill lines. It is easy to use more of both of these products than you really need to. By filling the measuring cup just to the first level you will save yourself money in the long run.

Store Brand

The idea of purchasing store brand products is certainly not a new one. The problem is that not every type of product has a suitable store brand alternative to choose from. It tends to payoff to switch your paper goods to the store brand. This includes everything from paper towels to paper plates.

There are plenty of store brand foods that can also be purchased without a real loss of quality. With things like sour cream and vanilla extract you will probably never even notice a difference.

Tip: Don't switch your entire grocery list to store brand alternatives. Instead, pick one item each trip and switch it for the less expensive option.

Tip: Store brand q-tips stink.

Pick your recipes

Eating in can be a lot cheaper than eating out. Sadly enough, it can cost a fortune to buy fresh ingredients to cook a meal at home. Consider something like lasagna that needs multiple types of cheeses, meats, sausage, noodles, tomatoes, and several spices. By the time you purchase these ingredients it will have been cheaper to have eaten out.

Before you select your recipes, make sure you play special attention to the ingredients. Pick recipes that only require a few ingredients, or at least common ingredients that you probably already have in the cupboard!

Butter

You probably use butter to cook or bake with on occasion. When you use a thing of stick butter remember to save the wrapper. Simply fold it up and place it in a sandwich bag that you can store in the refrigerator next to the rest of the butter. The next time you need to grease something simply grab one of the wrappers and smear the leftover butter in the pan!

Bottled Water

Stop buying bottled water. Having cold bottles of water in the refrigerator is one of the most convenient ways to cool down and quench a thirst. Not only is bottled water expensive, all of these empty bottles are bad for the planet.

There are plenty of other ways to enjoy tasty water. Consider putting a water filtration system in your house or investing in a Brita and a pack of filters. Most modern refrigerators will even produce filtered water that is every bit as tasty as bottled water. Over time you will save money by investing in an alternative way to get filtered water.
