5 Essential Questions for Your Lemon Lawyer

By Edited Oct 27, 2013 0 0

Lemon law can be as complex as any other field of law. If you're involved in a lemon law dispute, having a good, competent and experienced lawyer is extremely important. You'll be trusting your lawyer with your financial future, so you should take as much care in choosing him or her as you would in choosing your doctor. Here are five essential questions you should ask your potential lemon lawyer.

1. What resources do you and your firm offer?
The more resources your lawyer's firm can offer, the better off you'll be. Choose a firm that has more than just one lawyer capable of handling your case. Lemon law cases can take months, and in the event that your lawyer is ever sick or unavailable, you want to be secure in the knowledge that there will be someone else immediately capable of picking up your case without delay.

2. How many lemon law cases like mine have you handled and what were their outcomes?
Experience is one of the most important characteristics of a good lemon lawyer, specifically experience in handling cases similar to yours. This is because the nuances of lemon law make each kind of case unique, and a lawyer who's not familiar with these nuances is not as likely to be able to procure the best result for you.

3. What are your upfront fees and how much of the final settlement will you take?
If a California lemon car lawyer is confident in his or her ability to represent you successfully, he or she will take your case on a contingent fee basis, meaning that unless your case is won, you don't pay anything. Look for lawyers who charge no upfront fees and take a set amount upon settlement instead of a percentage.

4. Can you provide me with itemized costs report each week?
Weekly itemized cost reports are good for keeping you up to date on the status of your case and on what services you're paying for. If a lemon lawyer will, for whatever reason, not provide you with such reports, don't hire him.

5. Do you have a solid knowledge of my state's lemon laws?
Each state has its own lemon laws, and if a lawyer does not know your state's specific lemon policies, he won't be able to help you as much as a lawyer who's had extensive experience with them.
