5 Gallon Metal Gas Cans

By Edited Jan 29, 2016 0 0

5 gallon metal gas cans might be a much better option for you as opposed to plastic.  As with any other product, there are some pros and cons to using them, which you might want to consider before you make your purchase.  In this article, I would like to share some information with you about the benefits and drawbacks of using metal gas can instead of plastic.  It really all boils down to personal choice more than anything, but you might prefer one to another.  You will have plenty of options available to you in 5 gallon size that you will need to consider when you make your purchase.

Drawbacks to Metal Gas Cans for Sale

As you look for a 5 gallon tank, you will find there are many different places to shop for them.  The sellers are all over the place, including online and in the stores.  I would like to share with you some of the common drawbacks to using them, so you can make a good decision.

Rust:  Unlike plastic, the metal gas cans are normally made of steel.  For this reason, they are prone to rusting over time.  While this might not always be the case, since some could be made of tin or aluminum, you will find the most common material is steel.  Since steel is relatively cheap to compared to the others, it helps to keep the price down for consumers, so they are affordable.  If you go with galvanized, you will not have the issues with rust.

Ethanol:  Some metal gas tanks, regardless of size, are not made to handle over 10% ethanol.  For this reason, if you intend to use ethanol, you really have to pay close attention to what you are buying.  There is no point in spending your money on something that will not work for you and your needs.

Price: Price is a concern for some people.  While the pricing will vary greatly, in general, 5 gallon steel gas cans are more expensive than their plastic counterparts.  Of course, when you are shopping at the store you will want to check out the prices carefully, so you can make sure you get the best deal.  You can generally find them under 10 dollars in plastic, but they might be closer to 20 dollars if they are made of metal, depending on where you shop and what you buy.

Dents:  As with anything made of metal, 5 gallon gas cans are prone to denting.  While most small dents and dings will not really impact the integrity of the product or reduce the effectiveness, it is damage to a product and an eyesore.  You will want to keep this in mind as you consider all the different makes and models you have to choose from.

Benefits of 5 Gallon Gas Cans in Metal

Just as there are some drawbacks, there are also plenty of positive things you will want to keep in mind.

Strength:  There is just something about the strength of steel.  Plastic can crack if frozen and thawed several times, but steel will not.  This can make a 5 gallon metal gas can much more attractive and strong.  Since it is stronger, it will likely last you for quite a few years to come.

Long Lasting:  If you bang into a plastic gas can, it will likely puncture or break.  If you do the same with a metal 5 gallon gas can, it will probably just dent.  This is something to keep in mind since it will probably help the product to last a little longer, especially if you tend to be a little rough on your stuff.  If you go with galvanized steel gas cans, you will have something that will last a lifetime, as long as you take care of it.

Various Prices:  If you just want something cheap, you can find it.  If you want something really nice, but under 50 dollars, you can find that.  You will find all kinds of different options when you are out shopping and comparing prices and options.

What To Look For In A Gas Can

Air Hole/Venting:  I have owned gas cans in the past that did not have an air hole, to reduce pressure and let the gas flow freely though the nozzle.  It does not pour nearly as well and it can get a little frustrating.  It also makes filling up my lawn mower, four wheeler, or other item

Spill Proof:  You will not have to spill very much gas to realize how important this can be.  Not only will it cost you a lot of money if it spills out, but it can also be dangerous.  Given its flammability, you don’t want to have any spilled in the garage or any other enclosed space. Given the safety features of spill proof models, it really doesn’t make any sense to go with anything else.

Caps:  How easy is the cap and hose to use and pour?  Do you have to put it on and off each time you use it?  I have one that has the nozzle attached to the cap and each time I’m done with it, I have to remove it and screw the cap on with the nozzle going into the can.  When I need to use it again, I have to undo do it all over.  It is a pain and not worth the time and effort.

Why Are They All Red?

It’s the law.  Different colors are used for different types of fuels.  This is why, unless you are looking at vintage 5 gallon gas cans for sale, they will all be red.  Do not expect to find blue, designer colors, or anything other than plain red.  You will just have to accept the fact that it’s red.

It might seem there are a lot of things to keep in mind for such a seemingly insignificant purchase, but there really is a lot to consider when you are shopping around for a cheap 5 gallon metal gas can for home use.
