5 Good Reasons To Go Abroad For a Longer Time

By Edited Jun 30, 2016 0 0

Many people wonder if it’s a good idea to go abroad in order to experience something new in their lives. On the one hand, plenty of benefits and valuable experiences await us. On the other, you might feel anxious about this decision because you are afraid of the unknown, don’t want to leave your family and friends, or you are not very good in the language used in the country of your destination. In this article, I would like to present a list of 5 good reasons to go to a foreign country for a longer stay.

1. Getting better in a foreign language

Imagine you have been learning French or German in school, in a course or just for fun on the Internet. You enjoy watching movies in Spanish and chatting with your friend from Mexico. Your vacation last year in Italy was a great experience, but you regret that you couldn’t communicate with your aunt’s kids as fluently as you wished. Going abroad to improve your second language is one of the best reasons to make it happen. You can strongly benefit from spending your time in an environment where the language of your choice is used often. Just make the best out of it! Try to speak, listen and read as much as possible. Watch local TV channels, follow the news, read the newspapers and open your mouth as often as possible. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, ask your friends to correct you and feel encouraged to practice. Soon, you will notice how your language skills get better and better.

2. Discovering new places

Ever wonder how the view is from the top of the Eiffel Tower? Ready to visit the hometown of The Beatles or eager to have a gondola ride in Venice? Countless beautiful places are waiting to be discovered, and there is no better time to do that than during your time abroad. Use your weekends or take some vacation days (if you are also working abroad) to visit Hamburg or Amsterdam. On your next trip, go to see Krakow or Prague. If you are from America, Europe may feel especially easy to travel around as the distances between the countries aren’t that big.

3. Experiencing a different working culture

The ways how people work often vary between all the different countries. It’s worth considering that many companies in foreign countries use English as their official corporate language, so if you don’t feel comfortable enough in your second language, you still may find interesting offers in your native tongue. The work experience gained abroad is often highly appreciated among recruiters. Additionally, you will get the unique chance to make new contacts, work with international colleagues and establish awesome friendships.

4. Living on your own for the first time

If you are planning to move out and are looking for a unique occasion to do that, going to work abroad can be a very good choice. You will encounter challenges like having to look for accommodations, set up a bank account or get insurance policies. It’s worth finding out about the onboarding procedures offered by your future employer to ensure a smooth and successful relocation.

5. Writing your own story

In order to become a successful person, you often have  to leave your comfort zone, find your inner courage and take the bull by its horns. When your time abroad is about to be complete and you are ready to move on, you will have a great chance to review all the things you have achieved during that time and to sum up what you have learned from them. It will enrich your personality, widen your horizons and provide you with awesome stories to tell later.
