It's connected to the prevention of cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol and can even help prevent dental decay. So if you're looking for an all-round healthy product green tea should be high up on your list. It's difficult to know for sure why it works however it's thought to have a thermogenic effect.

Just a note, but if you intend to use green tea to help with weight loss it is much more effective to purchase a supplement rather than simply drinking cup after cup. Research suggests that for the active weight loss ingredient in green tea, EGCG to be effective you need to consume between 450-600mg throughout the day. The average cup of green tea has only 50-100mg of EGCG in it so unless you just love drinking tea all day long I would recommend taking a supplement.
