Living A Healthier Life Is A Choice
Let’s face it, as a nation, or even simply as a race for the most part, many of us are simply not as fit and healthy as we should be.
Waistlines seem to be ever-expanding, health related issues are becoming more and more common, and unfortunately, life expectancies are actually getting shorter, not longer. Being overweight can cause many health risks, such as CHD (coronary heart disease), high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and even some cancers.
Worldwide obesity rate have doubled since 1980. There are more obese and morbidly obese people living on this planet than ever before in history. Obviously this is not the way that things should be going and for that reason we finally find ourselves waking up to the dangers of being overweight, unfit, and unhealthy.
Making a conscious effort to live a healthier life, is a choice. Living a healthy life and following a healthy lifestyle is not as difficult as some would have us believe and by making a few adjustments here and there, we can be living a much healthier and happier life without feeling like we've made any big sacrifices in the process. Here’s a look at just five simple healthy living tips that we can incorporate into our daily lives, starting today.
Ditch The Car For A Healthier Lifestyle
In order to be more fit and healthy, we need to get plenty of regular exercise, and walking is a fantastic form of this. If you find yourself needing a few small items from the store and you live nearby, rather than jumping in the car to make a 60 second journey, why not go for a walk and head there on foot instead?Credit: By Marius Iordache [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons
Not only will you will burn calories, you will also get a decent cardiovascular workout in the process. By swapping the car and walking short distances the burned calories will soon add up, making you more fit and happier too. It is also proven that exercise causes your body to release endorphins which can cause a feeling of euphoria, reduce stress levels, and increase your self esteem.
For slightly longer journeys, why not invest in a bicycle instead? Cycling is another great form of exercise and it will also get you to your destination at a much faster pace than walking. Put Down The TV Remote For A Healthier Lifestyle
When it comes to exercise and physical activity, one of the biggest excuses that people use for not getting enough is that they “don’t have the time”. What’s ironic is the fact that more often than not, when they explain in great detail how busy they are, they’re currently sitting on their sofas watching a load of nonsense on the TV.Credit: By espensorvik (Flickr: Remote Control, Television - TV-controller) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons
They say they don’t have time to exercise but they have time to sit down on the sofa in front of the TV every night. Rather than watching the TV every night, why not simply set an hour or 2 aside a few days per week, and head to the gym or get some exercise in another way, instead?
A great way of motivating oneself is to record the favorite TV shows, and to then watch them as a reward for exercising in the first place. As soon as you complete your workout, then watch your favorite TV shows. If you skip your workout, you don’t get to watch, it’s that simple.
Never Grocery Shop On An Empty Stomach
As far as our health is concerned, what we eat and drink on a daily basis can play a pivotal role in determining just how fit and healthy we actually are. If you eat fatty processed junk foods laden with chemicals, salts, sugar, and fats on a regular basis, you won’t be healthy. If you get plenty of fresh and natural foods and snacks such as fruits and vegetables, you’ll be more fit and healthy. A great way of ensuring that you don’t give in to your cravings and eat a bunch of junk food, is to make sure that you never go shopping when you're hungry.
Think about it, when you crave junk food, you’re always hungry. As soon as you’re full, you no longer want the junk food. If you’re walking around the grocery store hungry, with your stomach rumbling, you’ll see temptation on every aisle. You will be much more apt to load your cart with food that has absolutely no nutritional value, but loaded with calories, carbs and fats. If you go to the grocery store after a healthy and delicious balanced meal however, you’ll feel full and satisfied, and you won’t be tempted to buy unhealthy junk food.

Drink More Water For A Healthier Lifestyle
Forget about sugary drinks and so-called “diet” drinks that are loaded full of harmful chemical sweeteners. If you want to truly be healthier, you should make sure that you drink plenty of fresh water every day.
The human body is made up of almost 80% water so that alone should tell you how beneficial it is. It helps flush toxins from the body, it helps improve brain function, it hydrates us, it helps our cells, muscles, and organs, and it’s extremely satisfying on a hot summer’s day. Try to consume at least eight 8 oz glasses (or bottles) of water per day. Mineral water is ideal but filtered water will do just as well and water filters for your tap can be purchased for a nominal price these days. These filters can remove impurities from your tap water and save you much money in the long run versus buying bottled water from the store.
