5 Things To Do On Oahu

By Edited Jul 7, 2014 0 0

It may not be the biggest island in Hawaii, but by far it is considered as the most popular. The island of Oahu is not designed for you to lay back and do nothing, although that option is certainly feasible. Whether you plan on laying out on the beach of Waikiki, doing nothing but sipping cool drinks with umbrellas, or your plans are to take the kids to the Honolulu Zoo, get ready for the time of your life. Many people visit the Hawaiian Islands with the intention of exploring them, unfortunately they end up leaving without actually seeing much more than the water in front of their hotel and while that is a beautiful sight, Hawaii has a lot more to offer. Some visitors may choose to restrict their activities to anything within walking distance from their hotel and even though the island may not necessarily be huge, you can still miss some of the important stuff. Let us take a minute to look at a few different things that should always be included when you visit the Hawaiian islands.

Gut Wrenching Tours

When it comes to history, Hawaii is right there with the rest and one of the most historic sites you will ever see is the one located at Pearl Harbor. The water in the harbor is subjected to a lot of boat traffic and considering the fact that this is the final resting place for one of the most historic battles, not to mention turning points in US military history, we should not be surprised. There is a certain somber attitude among the visitors to the monument of the USS Arizona and even with more than a million visitors each year, it still manages to knock the sails out of you, especially when you consider the fact that more than a thousand military men are buried in the ship below you. Whether you have relatives who lived in that time or not, if you join in one of these pearl harbor tours, you would probably be hard pressed not to realize the significance of what happened on that fateful day in December 1941.

Waves Like No Other

Maybe you just heard about it, or maybe you saw them in a movie or television show, but Hawaii has some of the best waves in the region and a great deal of them are located at the Northshore. The fact of the matter is that competitions are held on an annual basis on this island and if you happen to be visiting the island at the time, you should not miss any of them. Visitors come from all walks of life to take part in the kind of water sport that gives you the feeling of total freedom. Visitors can also have someone, give them a few lessons, just so they can try it out for themselves. Once you get the hang of surfing, especially on the north shore and their beautiful beaches, you will be ready to purchase your own board and as addictive as this water sport can be, don't be surprised if you keep coming back for more.

See Oahu from the Sky

Oahu Map

If you really want to get a good look at the island of Oahu, you should try to get high in the sky. There is nothing better than hopping onto a helicopter and trying to take in as much as you can from above. You will know that helicopter tours are important to the visitor if only for the fact that there is so much competition out there and guess what, they all want your business. These tours can be quick and precise or they can be guided to provide you with more information than you will be able to take in. The way you start to look at the island will change quickly, especially when you witness the spillage of oil still taking place from the USS Arizona. If you end up seeing everything that you want to on the island, start planning tours to the other well known islands in the chain.

Exploring the Oceans

Hawaii Living

Most people visit the islands because of the variety of options when it comes to water sports and with all that water you will certainly have a lot to do. We already know about the waves and the surfing, but that is not even the half of it. You could easily join one of the deep sea fishing expeditions and even though you might not be able to take the fish home to use at a later date, the fun and excitement of the catch is what it is all about. If you are not into catching the fish, maybe you would prefer to swim with them in a scuba outfit or just snorkeling in the shallow northern shore waters, Hanauma Bay or near to the Ko Olina Resort. Although it is safer to look around at the underwater sights with a group, visitors can go off on their own. Check at the front desk for available tours near to your hotel.

Take Advantage of the Restaurants

If you don't get to catch any, at least you can have them for dinner at one of the many restaurants on the island. When it comes to mealtime, Oahu has many restaurants to choose from and as you will find out, they don't mess around with their food. If a reasonably priced restaurant that includes tasty food is what you are looking for then Alan Wong's on King Street is where you will find it. This is a popular restaurant that serves some of the best seafood on the island, so if you don't want to miss your chance, it would be smart to make a reservation. Yes, they do serve chicken and beef and some of the best salad's you have ever tasted, but when you leave, you will feel as though you were pampered and treated like royalty.

And there you have it, a few things that you should not miss when planning your next trip to the island of Oahu.
