Whether you are making your first trip to the Big Island or going for a repeat visit, there will always be something new and exciting to do. In fact, the Big Island of Hawaii is always growing in size due to constant lava flow so there will always be a part of the island that you haven't seen! The Big Island has multiple climate zones so it can offer you everything from green rain forests, snow-capped mountains, perfect beaches, or volcanic deserts. Below I will give you the 5 best experiences I have had in my two trips to the island.

Zip Lining

zip line

This is one way to spend your day in the middle of a Hawaiian jungle in North Kohala and get an adrenaline rush at the same time. This experience will take up about half of your day so make sure you leave your schedule open. The company I used was great. You are driven to the jungle in some old school military vehicles and then your tour guides will lead you through the wilderness to your numerous zip lines. The scenery alone is worth the price of admission. Trust me. There a few different companies who offer zip lining and a quick internet search should give you all the options.

Mauna Kea Stargazing

The Mauna Kea Visitor's Center is a little more than halfway up the mountain. They offer telescopes here for public use. You will never find a clearer view of the night sky. It is remarkable. Mauna Kea is also a great place to be for a sunrise or a moonrise. Bring warm clothes because temperatures have the potential to drop quickly at this elevation.

Hualalai Golf Course

golf hualalai

This is a golfer's paradise. The Hualalai Golf Course is on the Four Seasons Resort and is the host to the PGA Champions Tour every year. It is not the most difficult course you will ever play but it can be challenging. The prices are steep and if you have to rent clubs it is an extra charge but I would do it again in a heartbeat. If you're with someone who doesn't golf bring them along to ride in the cart for the round. My girlfriend was able to ride in the cart with me for no charge and she had just as much fun as I did. Make sure they bring a camera.

Kailua-Kona Town

The main street, Ali'i Drive, in Kailua-Kona town is the classic tourist spot. You could spend hours walking up and down this strip in the heart of town. There are hundreds of shops, bars, restaurants, and hotels. Certain days feature a farmer's market with dozens of stands selling the freshest fruits on the island. This is also where cruise ships stopping at the Big Island dock to let off their passengers.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. You can watch the island grow with your own two eyes as the volcano spews out hot lava into the ocean. The park features over 100 miles of hiking trails, lava tubes, and even a museum. This park is a sacred place to native Hawaiians so be respectful of it and it's beauty.

These are only 5 of the countless reasons to visit Hawaii's Big Island. Now it's your turn! Get to Hawaii and find 5 more amazing, new things to tell the world about. See you there!
