5 Top Tips and Tricks for Google Adwords

Google Adwords can help you drive a great deal of traffic to your site if you know how to make the most of this advertising system. If you have heard a lot about Google Adwords but have never used it, here are the top 5 hints to help you make the most of Adwords without spending a ton of money.

1-Split-testing your ads

In Google Adwords, you will be creating ads that point to your website. Split-testing your ads can help you boost your click-through rate (CTR), which means more traffic to your site. Don't just write one ad. Adwords involves writing articles for your site. With split-testing, you would create a new ad campaign and write two ads that were almost identical. Then, change the headline of one ad and launch them. You will soon see which headline is more eye-catching. It will be the one that has the higher CTR on the report. It can take a couple of days to see results. Keep the one that is performing the best, and then try to create another split-test ad against it which will perform even better. Try to test the ads for a certain period in order to account for audience and day of the week fluctuations.

You might also want to split-test the ad at certain times of the day to see if it makes a difference to your results. For instance, if you are selling video games, your ad might get a better CTR at night than during office hours.

2-Using Negative Keywords

Negative keywords can help you create a more highly targeted ad. Set your negative keywords to weed out any traffic you know is unlikely to buy from your site. For instance, you might think that the word "free" or "used" would be good to omit so you can drive more highly targeted paying customers to your site. To create a negative keyword, simply put a negative sign or minus sign in front of the word, or include it on your negative list in the Adwords interface.

3-Use Questions in Your Headlines

Adwords results show that people are more likely to click on an ad which asks them a question and seems to offer them an answer. Be sure your headline grabs the reader's attention. The rest of the ad should also offer the promise of an answer to the question posed in the headline.

4-Don't Overspend

Adwords can eat up cash quickly if you do not know what you are doing, so start small and test everything. A small budget will allow you to test your campaign without much risk. You can also test more than one campaign for a variety of keywords and learn about what people are searching for on the internet without breaking the bank. Don't spend more than $20 a day on all your ads, and don't keep spending if you don't start seeing customers buying your products. You should be able to get your pay-per-click cost down to about 5 to 10 cents per click if you have a high-quality ad with a good click through rate. If you are getting good clicks on your ads but customers are not buying, then the problem might be your website.

5-Careful Keyword Selection

Avoid the temptation of stuffing your account with keywords. Thanks to the Adwords tool, it will suggest a lot of words, but try to create small, tight groups of keywords. You do not want to have so many keywords that are not clicked on that it lowers your CTR and deducts from your quality score. Therefore, start with a small group of highly-targeted keywords. You can create another ad group or ad campaign with more later. Split test and track your results using the Adwords reports. Refine your campaign in terms of ads, CTR and quality score. Pause the ads that don't work and try to improve the ones that do. You will soon get the hang of how to use Adwords successfully without spending too much to drive traffic to your site.
