5 Unique Valentines Day Gifts

By Edited Mar 9, 2014 1 0

The best gifts are personal. This year turn a typical Hallmark holiday into a truly memorable event with some very personal gift ideas.

1. T-Shirt Quilt

Most people have collected a great deal of t-shirts throughout the years. Shirts from past sports teams or alma maters or bands fill our closets and drawers. It's common that we don't wear these shirts either because we're afraid that they'll get ruined or they don't fit. There are companies now that will make these shirts into quilts so you can still keep them but also put them to good use. It's also a great idea to buy a t-shirt quilt with the intention of hanging it on a wall.

2. Wine of the Month Club

These clubs often offer a great deal of personalization regarding what types of wines are shipped directly to your door. A great addition to this gift would be a small wine rack. Wine racks can be very affordable and come in an incredible variety to match any kitchen or dining room. Wine clubs are typically offered through memberships which can be purchased yearly. Some companies offer the option of purchasing memberships for multiple years. Buying just a one year membership allows for the option of an easy gift next year by simply renewing the membership.

3. Photo Book

There are a number of websites that offer to construct photo books from uploaded photos. I've done this before and it's very easy to upload photos and build a book. Customizations can include: number of pages, captions, text boxes, page by page formatting. In the end, you can create a very personal photo book for your partner filled with memories that is visually tailored to the specific history of your relationship.

4. Custom Made Jewelry

Jewelry is just the gift you may be looking to avoid since it's so common but with some customization it can be truly meaningful. One easy way to decide what type of jewelry to customize is to use the jewelry that your partner currently has. Find their favorite rings, necklaces and earrings, take them into a local jeweler and ask them to create one single piece based on what is in the collection. Another way to personalize jewelry is to use favorite colors: wedding colors, colors from an alma mater, birthstones (of children of other loved ones), etc. It is always good to remember to get advice from a professional jeweler.

5. Private Movie Screening

The availability of this gift is subject to the region you live in and what theaters are near you. I have a number of friends who have contacted managers of movie theaters to ask for a private screening. This is typically done in the afternoon before most other movies begin and can cost from $50 or more depending on the theater (and the manager). I recommend speaking directly to the manager for information on this possibility since it is unlikely that most theaters have set rates for something like this. Also, do not let the manager give you the first price estimate, find a good figure to start ($50-$100) and go from there.

This Valentine's Day be sure to keep your gift giving personal and meaningful. Use one of these ideas to make a true memory.
