Sold 1.4 Million Dollars

5 United States coins to cherry pick for profit will not include the above rarity. The coin pictured has broken records at auction. An average example of the coin above would run around 150,000 dollars if you could find one.

This article, however, is a good place to start for the average collector trying to build value within their numismatic acquisitions. These five varieties of United States coins are only a few of the available options when buying coins for profit. Investors have begun to enter this market and rare obsolete United States currency is now seen as a great hedge against possible inflation.

Certified coins are recommended so you'll know what you're getting. Sometimes this is just not possible and raw coins must be purchased. Advice on this subject would be to learn as much as possible about the particular coins you are interested in. A good research tool is PCGS.

1897 United States Indian Head Cent 1 In Neck

They are also a good company to send your raw purchases to be certified once you acquire them. This guarantees you will be able to get the top dollar when you sell.

The first one I'm going to talk about is the 1897 United States Indian head cent with an upside down number 1 inadvertently cut into the obverse die. Enough examples of this variety exist to make this pretty easy to find.

As you can see in the photo, there is a misplaced point protruding from the neck. This mistake occurred during the manufacture of the die. Every one struck with this obverse die will show this error. Indian head collectors seek out this error coin due to that fact. It demands a nice premium from error coin collectors.

The key to cherry picking this variety is the fact that very few people who see Indian head coins, or even own them, have this piece of inside knowledge. If you're very lucky, you'll get the coin for a few dollars and this error coin will sell on eBay for $20.00 to $1000.00 dollars, depending on the grade. All high grade examples should immediately be certified for preservation and to attain value. Make sure you let them know you're expecting this submission to be attributed as an error coin.

1823 Over 22 United States Large cent
My next suggestion is a United States Large cent. 1823 was the year and another die variety created this rarity. In the year 1823 an obverse die from 1822 was still in usable condition. A mint engraver was instructed to re-cut the die with a three replacing the two in the date, this way the die could strike many more coins with little expense. A practice the mint used often to cut cost.

This die variety commands a premium from over date collectors and also has found a place in many collections. Slightly rarer then its normal date counterpart, a profit can be made by identifying this over date and quietly purchasing it for resale. Low grade examples can be found on line today for around 30.00, resale with the right publicity at auction will bring 50.00 to 100.00 for the same coin.

A semi key date within the one cent series brings up my number three coin, the 1924D Lincoln cent. Production for the one cent coin was low for the series. This can still be purchased for under a hundred dollars in fairly high grade. For some reason it has not caught on as much as the 1931-s and the 1914-d which are both now off the charts. This semi key brings an easy opportunity to make a profit reselling. High grade examples should be purchased and certified for resale.

1943 0ver 2 United States Jefferson Nickel
Moving on to number four, we're watching for a nice 5 cent coin. This one is a 1943 over 2 Jefferson Nickel. A war was going on and nickels were being struck from planchets containing 40% silver. Many people are unaware of this fact. The rarity comes not from the semi precious metal being incorporated into the coin but from the fact that another die was over cut from the previous year. A 1943 over 2 exists and is one of those coins that can be purchased for little money if the owner overlooked the over date. Again, resell in a publicized auction, flaunting the treasured over date and a profit will be realized.

Number five is another United States Large cent. The last year of issue for these beloved coins is 1857. Acquiring one of these may cost a pretty penny but then that's what you're buying. This one has slowly disappeared from most coin shops as they have people waiting for any examples that surface. eBay, however, has brought available coins to market. Making an investment in this limited commodity will realize appreciation rapidly as I have watched this coin rise in value at a steady pace for about 20 years. Any grade will do and this should be decided by your budget.

As with any investment, they come with no guarantee. This is true with coins to a point. More likely then not, the collector base will continue to grow. Each day Internet users join the fray of individuals searching for these limited edition United States coins. Just like Mark Twain said about buying land, they're not making any more of that. Coins enjoy the same limited status. What's already struck is all there will ever be. Getting in before they're all gone should be a very smart investment.

Hopefully, 5 United States coins to cherry pick for profit will start you out on the right foot, when trying to cherry pick coins for investment. Coin collecting is a great hobby but it never hurts to make a few bucks along the way.
