5 Ways to Permanently Banish Clutter from your Home

By | Sep 14, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Even when you are judicious about picking up, clutter just seems to build up around the edges of your rooms. There are ways to get it under control and keep it cleared out, and once you get your home picked up and clean, you need a strategy to keep it that way.

1. Pick Up the Paper

Paper seems to have a mind of its own and the first thing you should do is clear out and organize any paper. If you have a mountain of paper to deal with, set aside a block of time to weed through it. File it, pack it, or throw it away, but every paper should have a purpose and destination. In the future, place a bin next to the area where you open the mail so that you can dispose of junk mail before it grows into a stack and recycle it. Have a basket close to the door for your incoming and outgoing mail. Only put your non junk mail in the basket, because junk mail always goes straight into the recycle bin. If you do not have a filing cabinet, invest in one, because it will go a long way towards keeping the paper mountain from growing again. File important papers and throw the rest away.

2. Makeover Messy Closets

There is something to the old saying, "out of sight; out of mind", and this is exactly what happens in closets. You stuff something in the closet, close the door and it is instantly forgotten. Go through your closets periodically and weed out anything that you have not used in six months or a year. You can always donate your old belongings to charity, and do not be afraid to throw things away that are beyond use. A great way to keep your closet neat and clean is to add organizers and shelving so that everything has a place where it belongs.

3. Organizing the Home Office

All too often the home office is the room where everything gets dumped. Start by clearing out anything that does not have a legitimate reason to be in the office. That means clear out kids' toys and ski equipment. If you do not have a filing cabinet, get one. Then add some shelving, a bulletin board, an in/out basket and a mail sorter. Having an organized space to work in will make your working day a pleasure.

4. Kitchen Cabinet Clutter

Clutter lives in all cabinets and closets, and your best defense against a messy cabinet is to add storage structures inside the cabinet to properly store the contents of the cabinet. It is easy to heap stuff an already messy cabinet, but if you have spice racks, dish holders and dividers in your cabinets, it is much harder to just stuff something in the cabinet that does not belong there. Arrange you plastic containers in their respective racks, and you will always be able to find a lid for your container.

5. Making a Workshop Work

If you have a workshop in your home, you are all too aware of how quickly it can get out of hand and buried in clutter. The best solution for this problem is to hang a pegboard, and add shelves and racks to store all of your supplies and tools. By keeping your power tools up on shelves instead of scattered across the floor, you will also keep them safely away from small children. Once you get used to finding a tool on the first try, you will never want to go back to your old, cluttered ways again.
