5th Wheel Toy Hauler - A Recreational Review
While visiting a local RV show, I managed to take a detailed look at a 5th Wheel Toy Hauler for sale. Man, this is definitely the Toy Hauler for you if your idea of camping is staying at the Ritz Carlton hotel! These toy haulers use the 18-wheeler hitch also known as a 5th wheel, which mounts in the center of a pickup bed. It comes with three axles that are designed to support weights of up to 16,000 pounds. Although there are smaller 5th Wheel Toy Haulers available, most people usually buy them for their massive roominess and unrivalled luxury. They are widely considered to be the most expensive of the conventional Toy Haulers.
First the good news: The 5th Wheel Toy Hauler Trailers that I saw came with spacious kitchens, full size pantries, and impressive woodwork and flooring. The kitchens were well lit and housed a microwave oven and a refrigerator. I was very much taken back by all of the ample counter space and huge cabinets. These certainly do serve as a dream kitchen while you are on the go. A 5th wheel toy hauler also comes with a raised forward master bedroom making this the undisputed leader of spaciousness. The king-size bed and plush sofa will invite you to sit back and fire up the home entertainment center!
That said, what really makes the 5th Wheel stand out in the Toy Hauler world is the availability of a totally enclosed cargo area which is also known as the garage. Larger units tend to come with a solid wall and sealed door to separate the toys from the living space. I have even come across some that has a separate outside door to the garage. This feature serves two purposes. One is for keeping the wife happy, and the other for keeping the mud out of the living room. If you are like me, and love to carry too many tools, then you'll certainly appreciate having all of these garage cabinets.
Now the other news: A 5th Wheel Toy Hauler Trailer can be really heavy; weighing up to and in some cases exceeding, 16,000 pounds. And this means it is basically a big powerful tow rig. I am not exactly a huge fan of diesel pickups but if you want pulling power and something that resembles decent mileage, then a diesel pickup is certainly the way to go. Thankfully though, diesels can last for a long time, and you can find many such models in the used market.
Unless you have big rig experience, you will undoubtedly find that towing one of these can be a little different from towing your basic rear hitch type of trailer. As they are so large and so close behind the driver, they will definitely keep you on your toes, especially when you are driving through town. If you are not careful enough, you could, to your dismay, look in your rear-view mirror just in time to witness the trailer laying flat at a stop sign. I've been there, and done that before.
Ultimately, finding the right Toy Hauler is a personal decision you will have to make. That said, if you require luxurious accommodation with a separate toy garage, then the 5th Wheel Toy Hauler may just be what you are looking for.
