We all have days where we're feeling down.
Maybe life is throwing too many problems your way and everything is getting on top of you. You could even be feeling stressed over work and need to let off some steam.
Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?
Whatever is getting you down, the best thing to do is lift your mood and tackle these problems productively. Here are 6 ways to boost your mood right now:
1. Stop what you're doing
For two minutes, just stop what you're doing and clear your thoughts. Push out any stress and negativity. Focus on a clear, blank mind where the troubles have disappeared. Close your eyes and imagine picking up these harmful thoughts, like trash, and throwing them to the side. Allow yourself to focus on one thing at a time. We're not very good at multi-tasking so focusing on one thing at a time will make you more productive and help you plough through your to-do list.
2. Breathe deeply
Yes this is a cliché. But it works! Once you have cleared your mind of clutter, just take 4 or 5 slow deep breaths. This will slow down your heart rate and promote a feeling of calmness. Breath in through your nose, hold for 2 seconds and exhale through your mouth.
3. Go for a walk
Going for a walk is a great way to clear your mind and promote well-being. It's also a light form of exercise so not only will you feel happier but your body will feel the benefits too. Try to get away from your desk at lunch time or have a quick walk in the evening. You can even go for a wander around the office for a quick fix. A bit of fresh air will do the world of good and will break up the day.
4. Talk to somebody
"Hi, how was your weekend?" - You don't get much better than this for a conversation starter. Talk to your colleagues and distract yourself for a few minutes. Having a positive conversation will boost your mood and help to build your relationship with others. By building relationships in the workplace you will be creating a positive environment, reducing the chances of having a bad day.
I don't mean that you should randomly laugh manically! Instead, have a good laugh about something to instantly make you feel better. This could be a funny video, the traditional cat photo (or lolcat) or even simply watching a comedy on TV. Laughter is the best medicine.
6. Eat or Drink
Stick the kettle on and get a nice tea or coffee brewing. Caffeine is probably not recommended but everybody loves a hot beverage, right? A healthy snack will give an instant pick-me-up and will get you lifted in no time. We tend to get a little ratty when we're hungry so pick up a banana or granola bar to curb those cravings.
You should be able to do most of these, if not all of them daily. Work them into your daily routine for an instant boost to your mood and in no time you would have developed the habits of keeping yourself uplifted every day.
