I admit that yes, I am an internet marketer and I make money from building websites, but I don't make money from teaching people how to make money online. I have followed some of the top internet marketers over a period of several years and while sometimes they produce some great products on internet marketing, many offer advice that is untested and often completely wrong.

Here are seven common things which internet marketers like to teach, but I think are completely wrong.

1. Don't make a website about how to make money online

I have read this advice by many internet marketers, which is kind of strange as that is exactly what they are doing. I suppose it makes good sense to them that they aren't training future competitors, who could eventually become more successful than themselves.

While I agree that it is a good idea to work in non-internet marketing related areas, especially in the beginning, there is no denying that teaching people how to make money online is an extremely profitable and easy way to make money online.

Even if you are just starting out at making money online, I think it is a good idea to start your own blog about how you are trying to make money. Recently, I have really started to enjoy reading blogs by people who are just starting out to make money online and found their ideas and thoughts to be very refreshing. People love to read success stories and as your income starts to rise, your readership and community will grow also.

2. Don't use a free hosting service

This is another popular myth perpetuated by internet marketing gurus. I agree that yes, it can be a good idea to get your own domain and hosting service, it isn't absolutely necessary. Griz's making money online blog for beginners is a popular blog about making money online and it uses Google's free hosted service. The 'fake Steve Jobs' is another popular blog hosted on blogger.com

One of the advantages other of course than it is free, is that your site can easily handle high volumes of traffic, if your site every hits the front page of sites like Digg.

3. Yes, you can find all the information online for free, but it takes too long

I really hate this argument that many internet marketers use to sell their products. Most of the time internet marketers aren't selling any real new techniques for making money online. Often they just collate the information that is freely out there, package it and give it some fancy new name.

To justify the cost of some of these expensive programs, some internet marketers pack in a huge amount of information to their course. People get overwhelmed with all of the material, which often leads them to give up. If they have joined a membership website, that is costing them so much money every month, they feel like they have to ignore everything else to make sure they are getting their money's worth.

If you don't feel like you have the time to read the information that is available for free on blogs and forums, you just as likely won't have the time to complete the expensive course you have bought into.

There can be no better way to learn about internet marketing than just doing it and figuring things out by yourself along the way. If you have any problems or questions, just hit one of the many making money online forums and you will find many, many people more than happy to help you out with any problems or questions you have.

4. They have the secret to making money online

If you are thinking about buying an internet marketing product and sitting on the fence, check the sales page again and check if it mentions that they have the secret to making money online. If they had the 'secret' to making money online, do you think they would be telling the world about it?

The only secret there is to making money online, is that it takes a lot of work and perserverance. Making money online might seem extremely competitive right now, but I personally think that we haven't even scratched the surface. It is still not impossible for a single person to make millions of dollars from a website. There could be some point in the future when bigger and bigger companies get involved it is no longer easy to make money online.

Read and read all of the information that is available, ask questions on forums and experiment yourself. You have to find your own 'secrets' to making money online. What works for one person isn't necessarily going to work for you.

5. Content is king

Some people might disagree with me on this and of course I believe having valuable and useful content on your website is important, what matters most really is links, especially if you are looking to get free search engine traffic. Of course, you could argue that you need a lot of content to get links, it is not necessarily the case.

6. Twitter is a great tool for marketing

Another controversial subject, but if you are serious about making money on the internet, especially if you are not someone famous - forget about twitter. If you are a famous internet marketing guru, I can see that twitter could be useful for marketing, but if you are average Joe, you are probably just wasting your time.

Most people don't really care what you say on twitter, it is filled with bots and fake profiles and is one of the biggest potential time wasters there is on the internet. I am not saying to completely ignore twitter, all I am saying is don't spend 12 hours a day reading and writing messages there. Create an account, but only check it once or twice a day. Some people might say Facebook is another time waster, but because of the volume of users on the site, I don't think it is something you can ignore and Facebook has some interesting ways to promote your business or website.

7.You can make money while you sleep

If you see this on a internet marketing sales page, you should run very fast. This phrase might have worked when the internet was still new, and it was a new concept that internet websites keep running even out of business hours, but the phrase conjures the idea that you can somehow make money on the internet while you are sleeping.

Maybe someone will one day invent some kind of machine that turns your dreams into articles, info-products or even a block buster movie, but until then there's no way to make money while you sleep. Yes, you can put in a lot of hours working during the day and keep taking sales from your internet website while you sleep, but no-one is going to pay you for sleeping.
