Road Trip Safety Tips

Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the scenery. With the right insurance cover, you can now get on the road with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you have more than enough coverage. If you are a woman driving alone, there are some precautions you should take before heading out to avoid being stranded or caught in a bind. Read on below to learn 7 road safety tips for women, so you can stay safe while on the road.

Be Prepared with a Solid Plan

If you have decided to go on a road trip on your own to a place you’ve never been, it’s crucial that you create a plan before you set out! Using Google maps or Mapquest, print out a map of where you’re going. Be sure to stay on major highways to ensure that you’ll always be within sight if you have a break-down.

If you plan to travel more than 300-400 miles -- which is what the typical driver will do in an eight hour period -- you should plan to pull over and stay in a motel while there’s some light outside. This will keep you safe from any unsavoury characters.

If you can afford it, you should also invest in a navigation system. Your newer model car or SUV may even have a built in GPS system that you can use.

Know Where You’re Staying Each Night

If you plan on staying in a hotel while on the road or at your destination, book it before you leave home to ensure your safety. You should pay a little extra to get a room that has a kitchenette or a fridge if you don't mind eating cold food.  This will save you from having to go out when night falls.

Most of the popular hotel chains have locations right off the main highways so that you will not have to travel too far into any foreign cities and get lost. This also makes it easy for you to rise early and get right back on the road.

Let Your Loved Ones Know

If you are planning a trip alone, you should make sure that you leave all the details of the trip with a friend or family member. In this way, someone will know where you are if something happens. Inform your family immediately if you decide to change plans while on the road.

Drive By Daylight

If you’ve planned your schedule the right way and start your days early, you should be able to limit your driving to daylight hours. Don’t try to drive too much and risk becoming tired or driving somewhere unfamiliar in the dark.

The first rule of the day should be to fuel up. The last thing you want to do is run out of gas and have to wait by the side of the road for help.

Only Stop at Public Places

When you have to use the restroom along the way, you should stop only at a travel service plaza. This is an area that will have restaurants, a gas station, picnic area, and a lot of other people!

Pack a cooler with drinks and snacks, and you’ll avoid as many pit stops as possible. Stop only when you need to fill up your gas tank and go to the washroom.

Dress Appropriately

As a single woman , you want to make sure you are dressed appropriately for the weather and to avoid any undue male attention. Avoid skimpy dresses, skirts or shorty shorts that may draw the wrong type of looks. While you want to do your best to stay comfortable in hot weather, you need to remember that you are alone and don’t need any trouble that comes from wearing clothes that could be interpreted in the wrong way.

Always Remain Alert!

While it can be easy to get lost in a phone conversation while you are on the open road, you need to remain focused and alert at all times. When you go into to service centers, you need to pay attention to the people around you.
If you stay alert and undistracted, you will avoid becoming a target of any seedy character with dishonorable intentions.

It’s wonderful to be able to jump in a car and take a road trip to some new destination or visit an old friend who lives on the other side of the continent. But you must have a plan. Use common sense at all times, and pay attention to your surroundings if you want to make it home again safely. If you purchased cheap insurance for women, make sure that you have sufficient coverage in case something goes wrong on the road.
