7 Space Saving Ideas for Kitchens

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Although it is lovely to have a kitchen with room for an island unit, all the cooking equipment you want to display and a large table for entertaining friends, sometimes we have to put up with a less than palatial sized kitchen. If you are trying to cope with a tiny, cramped kitchen here are some ideas to help:-

1. Use the Height of the Room

If your room is high enough fit taller than average wall units to add additional storage space. Alternatively store attractive, little used items on tops of wall units. Just make sure you have a set of steps handy for when you need to reach them. No balancing on a kitchen stool! If you have ceiling space consider hanging a butchers rack. You can hang saucepans and other utensils from it on hooks.

2. Use the Area below the Units

The area between the kitchen units and the floor is often wasted space. Look at options for fitting drawers in the plinth. If you do not have room for a radiator consider fitting a kick space heater there too.

3. Use Every Gap

Narrow cabinets or slide out units fitted into a small space are useful for storing small items such as spices or narrow utensils such as trays and baking pans.

4. Off the Floor

If you have very little floor space fit a trash can on the back of the door under the sink. As this will be a small container out of necessity, you will need to empty it often, which is no bad thing!

5. Use Other Areas

Fit appliances which don't need to be in the kitchen into other areas. For example kitchens in many parts of Europe often include a washing machine and tumble drier but this may be better fitted into another room such as a bathroom, utility room or garage to free up space in the kitchen. If you only have room for a small under counter freezer in your kitchen think about installing one elsewhere.

6. Use Your Windows

You can grow herbs in pots on your window sill or use the sill as an extra shelf to store attractive utensils in jars. As for window coverings, use blinds in your kitchen instead of kitchen curtains for a more streamlined look taking up less space.

7. Fit Shelves

Add shelves to spare wall space to free up cupboard space. A great place to store attractive china and good looking storage jars filled with dry goods such as rice and pasta.
