7 Tips for Lighting Up Your Living Room

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Designing the lighting is an essential part of decorating your living room but many of us forget and see it as something to think about once every thing else has been chosen and bought. Here are 7 tips to improve the lighting in your living room starting as soon as you can.

1. Plan in Advance

Rather than waiting until everything else is in place, make a plan for your lighting at the same time as you are planning the rest of the room. Some lighting ideas will require an electrician to change wiring and sockets so you need to do that before you have updated your walls and flooring.

2. Give up on the Pendant Lighting

If you have been using a central pendant as your main source of lighting, it is time for a change. A central pendant light is too harsh for relaxing and generally not light enough for many tasks such as reading or needlework.

3. Try Wall Lights

Instead of relying on a central pendant light, think about having some wall lighting installed. This will open up your whole room by creating a wash of light over your walls and will make the room seem taller too.

4. Highlight Features

Use small spot lights to highlight the objects you like in your room. A few spot lights in your ceiling over the window can enhance the look of your curtains. A detachable spot light gripping a plant pot can really highlight architectural plants. And you might like to show off a painting with a picture light or your favorite china collection with a cabinet light.

5. Decorate with Lamp Shades

You can get some beautiful lamps and lamp shades which are works of art in themselves. For example there are reproduction Tiffany stained glass lamp shades which look a million dolars but cost a lot less than genuine antique lamp shades (which actually do cost a million or more). Even the latest designer lamp shades will add a welcome touch of decoraton and lift your whole room.

6. Plug in Lights for Particular Tasks

If you want to do close work or read in your living room you don't have to set the whole room up to cater for this. Leave your relaxing ambient light for full time use and switch on a task light such as a reading lamp if you need more light for a particular task.

7. Go for Glamor

Even if your pendant light is not so much is use as the main light in your room you can still leave it as a glamorous centerpiece by installing a spectacular light fitting. Chandelier lamp shades look wonderful in the right room and you can get modern varieties as well as those those reminsent of a bygone era. If your ceiling is high enough to take the size of the fitting then go for it!
