7 Healthy Substitutes For Sweets and Sugar

Are you trying to end up with sugar or sweets? Or maybe would you like to eat something sweet but you are afraid of losing your shape or just that it is bad for your health? I am going to present you seven foods that will sweeten your day without you worrying of health consequences.

1. Dates

They can be a sweet snack with a lot of health benefits. They contain great amount of minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. Moreover, dates are great source of vitamin A which is good for vision,  vitamins B1 and B2 that may prevent body from aging and the development of heart disease. This fruits are rich in dietary fiber, which normalizes bowel movements and helps maintaining low bad cholesterol levels.


2. Xylitol

Have you ever heard of sugar, which helps your teeth being healthy? If not, I would like to present you xylitol. This substance is naturally present in many fruits and vegetables. Whereas it tastes like sugar, the difference is that it provides a lot of health benefits. It reduces amount of acid-producing bacteria by about 90 percent. Eating xylitol can help your teeth to be prevented from decay and  support them recovering damaged tissue. Moreover, replacing sugar with xylitol, along with it’s ability to remineralize bones tissue,  it will help your bones to be stronger. Among other health benefits are preventing ear and upper respiratory infections, maintaining low level  of blood glucose and help fighting with infections.

3. Blackstrap molasses

It is a kind of molasses, the dark thick liquid that is produced while sugar cane is refined into table sugar. Sounds not really interesting? It shouldn’t!  Black molasses is a wonderful source of elements that your health will love. It’s high in iron, potassium, calcium, selenium and vitamin b6. Minerals in this type of molasses have positive effect on heart and help in heart attack prevention. High content of calcium will keep your bones strong and healthy. Molasses is a good source of antioxidants. There are a number of research saying about its role in cancer prevention.


4. Dried figs fruit

Do you  enjoy eating them? If so, I have god news for you. Figs are one of the healthiest dried foods on the world. Although being dried, they do not lose any minerals. First of all, dried figs contain great amount of fibre which significantly improves digestion and prevents constipation. Secondly, because of being rich in antioxidants, eating figs can help preventing cancer and many dangerous heart diseases. Moreover dried figs are very helpful in restoring sodium-potassium balance in body, what is significant in counteracting hypertension and keeping your body in a good condition.

5. Stevia

Would you like to eat something sweet, but you are afraid of calories? No problem, stevia is about 10 to 15 times sweeter than sugar and has virtually zero calories. Isn’t that amazing? Moreover,  if you choose to eat stevia your health can benefit a lot from it. Just because stevia does not raise blood sugar levels,  it is really great sugar replacement for diabetics. It is also proven, that  taking stevioside (one of stevia’s sweet compounds) can reduce  a blood pressure. This wonderful plant is also helpful with decreasing bad cholesterol levels, what prevents from some serious heart diseases.


6. Honey

For a very long time honey was used as the natural medicine. Today,  we know really much about it’s benefits to human’s health. Due to huge amount of flavonoids and antioxidants  honey helps reducing risk of some kinds of cancer and heart diseases. It has also anti-bacterial effect, what supports treating infections and is also good for skin. Although honey contains sugars, they are not exactly the same evil as white sugar, but they are helpful in regulating blood sugar levels. Honey has also natural abilities to heal wounds and making them recover faster.

7. Raisins

They are great healthy alternative for sweets. Raisins are good source of vitamins such as vitamin K, C, E and B. The fibre which they contain is very important for your stomach to stay in good shape.  They are also rich in antioxidants. What’s more, raisins will help your eyes to stay in good condition, because they protect them from being damaged by oxidants. Another fact is that raisins are quite rich in calcium, what has positive effect on bones.

As you see, there are quite much healthy alternatives for sugar. So maybe another time when you will think of something sweet, instead of products high in white sugar, you should try some of the foods mentioned above? You  would definitely satisfy your taste and you health will be thankful.
