8 Flying Tips for Last Minute Vacations
Whether you're traveling with kids in tow or taking a much-needed getaway with your sweetheart, planning last minute vacations can yield significant savings, especially when it comes to traditionally costly airfare. To help you maximize your savings, here are ten flying tips if you're looking to go on a last minute vacation.
Search Online – Many discount travel websites specialize in last minute airline and hotel booking. When airlines have empty seats they need to fill, they will often sell them through such travel sites as really discounted prices. Many sites also allow users to set up alerts for cities they wish to travel to so when prices drop below a certain point, they can be alerted via email.
Fly Mid-Week – Most travelers prefer to fly during the weekend so flying during the middle of the week is typically less expensive.
Fly Red Eye or Late Night – In a similar vein, taking a red-eye or late night flight can also be cheaper than flying in the early morning or during the day.
Call Airlines Directly – Sometimes you can score great deals by contacting airlines directly. Many airlines don't just offer private sales through their websites but via the phone as well. Talk with an airline representative to see what discounts they can offer on flights to your chosen destination.
Utilize Nearby Airports – Most metropolitan areas (think New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.) have more than one airport fliers can choose from. Often, the smaller airports accommodate regional airlines, which may offer much cheaper airfares.
Have Flexible Travel Dates – If you can, be flexible about the dates you're willing to depart. For whatever reason, you may find last minute vacations fares differ greatly from one day to the next.
Avoid Holidays – Airfares are typically much higher around holiday dates such as Thanksgiving so avoid traveling during busy holidays.
Check Round-Trip and One-Way Fares – Even if you're flying round-trip, make sure you check the prices of one-way fares; you may find it much cheaper to purchase two one-way tickets than a round-trip fare.
