8 Tips for Writing Effective Consumer Reviews

By | Jan 29, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Whether they tell a cautionary tale or sing a product praises, consumer reviews can have a powerful and far-reaching effect on other consumers. Here are eight tips to help you write effective, valid consumer reviews.

Don't Write in the Heat of Moment – If a particular company has done you wrong, give yourself time to calm down before you take to the Internet. Consumers are looking for legitimate reviews that can backup their claim, so simply writing how horrible a company is neither helpful nor informative.
State Specifics – From brand names to model numbers, the more information you can supply, the better. Consumers read online reviews most often when they're searching for information related to a specific product so list all the information you can in your review.

Avoid Harsh, Profane Language – You want your review to be considered a reliable, valid source by other consumers; harsh and profane language can undermine that objective. In addition, such language often appears amateur and unprofessional. Stick to the facts and avoid knee-jerk reactions, name-calling, and profane language.

Be Detailed – Generally speaking, the more details and information you can give, the more helpful your review will be. For example, list both the pros and cons of the product or service you are reviewing, or if you have found additional uses for a product other than its primary or intended use.

No Second-Hand Accounts – This may seem obvious, but only write from personal experiences, not secondhand information or stories. Make sure you are familiar with a product, service, or company before you begin to spout opinions online.

Candidness is Appreciated – While you should always use professional and polished language, other consumers will benefit from your review if you are candid and open about your experience. You can certainly state feelings of dissatisfaction or unhappiness without trashing a product's or company's reputation.

Be Original – Every consumer has a unique perspective and point of view so be original when it comes to writing consumer reviews. Don't imitate someone else's style; let your personality shine through. For example, use humor to write about a bad experience with a product or company.
